Has anyone ever used this luggage before? I like the material the caribou and pelican cases are made of, but I'm looking for a top load case. I also like the looks and the locks on these. Anybody know any place to get these?
Thanks

Brad

I ordered the Pelicans 36L with HB rack, but also own ktm gobi bags. I plan to try both bags out to see which I like better. I will post pics.

Europe .... Made in Texas
Those Hepco Becker Gobi's look the business don't they? If I hadn't got the OEM stuff ... they'd be the gear of choice for me. As to where you can get them in the US you might want to see if Twistedthrottle can help. They get shipments from Europe all the time.

I attended BMW International Biker Days in Garmisch Germany over the July 4 weekend. While there I had a mission to evaluate any and all panniers in an effort to reach a decision what I will put on my Super Tenere. I saw just about everyhing at the event. The only panniers I did not see were the Jesse, Micatech and anything using the Pelicans. I have a Pelican on my KLR so I have an idea about their durability and usefulness.

Summary - I'm going with the Touratech Zega Pro.

My requirements include rugged enough to take a drop off road at speed with the ability to repair any damage and carry on. This pretty much rules out any of the alu clad plastic options. And leaves me with the all alu panniers or possibly the ruggedized thermoplastic panniers.

My brief perosnal evaluation of the popular options:

TRAXX - Best looking panniers of all. Reaallllyyyy love the looks. But their construction and mounting method puts them well down the list for me. Plastic / alu clad just does not cut it for me.
Yamaha OEM - Really liek the narrow profile on the bike and the mounting system. Dont like the fiddly latches and he plastic / alu clad construction.
GIVI Trekker - Nice looking panniers. DOnt like the alu clad / plastic construction
Italian Touratech imitator - cant remember the name. These have some promise. They were on display in Garmisch and seemt o be a good alternative to the Touratechs.
Hepco Becker Gobis - Really like theses. Need to do a bit more research to see how they hold up in a significant get off. Do they get destroyed beyond roadside repair or are they tough enough to hold up in a crash.
Touratech Zega Pro - There is a reason they are THE panniers for adventure riders. All the features required together with rugged construction, now have a quick release mount system, etc. etc. etc. IMO the extra $$$ for the Touratehcs is justified
Micatech - some possibilities but for me they are fugly.
Jesse - Like these a lot and they satisfy many of my requirements. Just that I theink the Touratechs with the completely removable lid and all the options for mounting extra stuff like fuel bottles mae the Touratechs a better choice.
Pelicans - My esperience is these hold up to alot of abuse, are water tight, etc. Not the best looking panniers IMO.

Thats my 2 cents worth. Saving my pennies for the Zega Pros. Will be the narrow panniers on both sides for me. No top box.

Amotostuff is a distributor for Hepco Becker luggage, etc in the USA. 5% off if you tell them you are ADV.

Also, sometimes they have free shipping offers, although I don't believe so right now.

Good outfit!

Another possibility: While a bit of a tangent, www.muffintopindustries.com is willing to custom make aluminum luggage. While I don't have any of his bags, he seems to have a good reputation. Once you've added a mounting system, the cost will approach some of the others, but the benefit is to get what you want in just a few weeks.

I asked him about a top box with a hinge and the size of my Givi Maxia 52 liter. His answer was $300.

Not bad!!! Looks very similar to a bag system I had on my DL1000. Very rugged!

Capitalcycle.com in northern VA also has them. I'm looking at the topbox to go with my Jesse bags - much cheaper than Jesse and will stay cooler inside due to the double-walled plastic construction.

Have you ever used the water hauling feature of the Gobi's when camping. I've never seen anything like that before in a side case.

These muffintops are what I put on my Wee because they were cheep. I have come to think they are great! very rugged . good locks , easy to pack. my wife lined them with a thin carpet so no aluminum gets on anything.

I would have went with the OEM stuff as well, had I not had such a problem with the locks on the demo ride. Thanks for info.

Are these set up like the touratech Zega Panniers w/ 2 locks per pannier where one becomes a hinge? What racks did you mount these on when you put them on your wee? Can you set them up so you can use a SW Motech or a Givi racks?
Thanks,

Brad

They have two locks but no hing. The bike had Givi racks on it so I just used them.

I never used the bags. Bought them for my 950SE and never got to try the bags or water storage out.
