this is a weight watchers thread for the super t.

I know our beloved heffers will never be exc 450s or as light as the new honda ::)
but the question is, where could one lose some weight off the big girl? Yes I know, in the end, it will not make a huge difference, but what if you could shave 30 lb.
god knows I shaved that off my fat ass, and I feel great ::015::

I've started with the obvious, me.
Lost some pounds a few years ago, and managed to keep the bulk of it off. Can't loose anymore, as I will not be able to pick it up :)
You could also ditch the crash bars, skid plate, but then the bike would be in pieces every time you dropped it, so that stays on

what I've done:
-Full exhaust system. the slip on is stupid heavy. The arrow headers certainly help with weight loss.
-My battery is over 4 yrs old, so I'll probably be switching to one of the light weight jobbies
-I have a rigid 6" light under my light, that is surprisingly heavy...might pull that if it's worthwhile
-I'm currently running hid lights, which work great, but have ballasts, ignitors, and wire...all sitting high up. Replace those with cree LED...
-I also removed my errmmm...removable givi right rack c/w rotopax and fuel (it's a hefty 25lbs). that will only go on longer rides, when it's actually needed.

thoughts?

Start replacing as much steel (bolts, axles, misc) with titanium pieces. That's what the sporty bikers do.
And yes the biggest equation to it all is your own ass!
I laugh at the sporty riders saying how light they made their bike, standing next to their bike. MAN just loose some pounds yourself!!!

I thought about bolts, but I'm thinking in general terms.
I used to own two KLRs so if it ain't broke, I don't fix it. The bolts are definitely not broken :D
And yes, it makes a huge difference to loose pounds off your own body, and it's healthy for you ::009::

The ABS/UBS is a big fat module, that could shave several pounds, but on the other hand, it works quite well to stop the beast with its extra weight... ;D

nope. that stays. The ABS system is excellent, and has bailed my ass out a few times.
I have an off switch for scary off road stuff. Works great.

I think you sort of answered your own question, over here the response to people having an issue with fat BMW/Jap adv bikes is 'buy a KTM'!
In reality it wont be cheap on an S10, exhaust as you say and maybe wheels? plastic tank? I guess most of the weight is frame and the big/long swing arm, hard to do much about these.

my own theory is not to make it even worse, I don't carry pillion's so weighty panniers and top boxes are out and a roll bag or two suffices for trips,
I could do with losing a few pounds but Christmas is too close now!

good luck, be good to hear what you do

I have a ktm..not that kind of ktm (exc 450)
i've done some work on a friends 1190 and to tell you the truth, I'm not impressed with fit and finish.
It's a pain to work on.
It is much lighter in standard trim, but he since installed some hefty bags on it (jesse I want to say) and it's not a light bike anymore.
I'm after lighter weight for day trips.
for long trips, the givi bags go on, and I try to pack light.

The swing arm weights very little. The pumpkin with the gears is the very heavy bit. But I wouldn't trade that for a chain.

Thread title correction..."Hello, my name is Tenere and I'm a workhorse".

Nice to hear you admit personal weight. Funny to here some "complain" about the bikes weight when they're overweight. Disclaimer, I could stand to lose 20-25 lbs.
Back to my point...To me the Tenere is a well made, purpose built machine. Would I like it to weigh less, of course. But, at what cost? Reliability, ruggedness, cost for exotic material (carbon fiber, titanium).

I'm going to use a truck analogy. I own a 1 ton diesel pickup. It's big and heavy but, it can go to the grocery store and tow/haul lots of weight. A 1/2 ton truck is not up to the task with the same capabilities. Yep, it's lighter and may be more "nimble" but, can't do the work of a 1 ton. Now back to the Tenere. For a bike of this size and weight, most of us know it handles really well and seems to mask it's weight. I come from a dirt bike background (rode mostly KTM's that were great) and am very impressed with how well the Tenere does off-road. I just don't see a practical way to substantially lighten this bike and just accept it's weight. Maybe Yamaha will lighten it up some in the future.
REMEMBER, it's a 1200cc adventure bike. It's not how fast you get there, it's that this bike will take you there...and back.

Time to go have some twinkies!

If you strip the bike to what Yamaha ships, it's amazingly lighter than when we add crash bars, skid plates, rear racks, boxes & bags, etc.

I had the KTM 990 ADV for a while, yes lighter but the big KTM's are notably top heavy IMO against a BMW or the S10, it was a good road bike but clearly not designed to fall over, it was a heave to pick up compared to a GS I had.

I was worried about the weight of the S10 but the test ride proved how well it carried its weight and the overall package with weight low and front biased, the linked brakes and shaft were the icing on the cake that sealed the deal. I did consider the 'cheap' KTM 1050 but other than image and a bit more power it didn't add up, no regrets.

After hitting a deer at high speed and still being able to ride it off to the side of the highway, I have a new appreciation for the weight (stability) of the Tenere. Bike took a 75 MPH hit, it was totaled by the insurance company. It never came close to going down. I think the weight is just right for the way I use the bike both off pavement and on.

Where what and how do you ride, that have brought you to the conclusion that you need a Tenere that is lighter ???? ::017::

Hey Greg, sounds like the FZ and FJ have you yearning for lighter toys... nut'n wrong with that.

Checkwrecks got it right, we debate every pound here on the interweb, then we add the most robust farkles we can buy with absolutely no consideration to there weight and the kind of protection we really need. What's wrong with us????? 8)

you guys are not reading my mail right.

what are the things that could come off the stock bike to make it lighter?

I'm not talking about stripping back essential bits like the ABS pump.
I'm not talking about removing necessary protection off the bike (skid plate, crash bars)

Is there anything else that I missed except the battery, and exhaust?

Yes pushing my FJ around the garage vs the tenere is a big difference, since both bikes differ by about 140 lbs wet claimed,
the tenere will never be a lightweight, and I'm not aiming for that.
Just want to take off some up high weight, that's there e.g. battery, aftermarket lighting, exhaust.

where do I ride? everywhere but single track.

Remove:

_ passenger seat
_ passenger pegs/ mounting brackets
_ passenger grab handles
_ rear mounting plate

Close to a 10lb weight loss in these items.

passenger seat is gone.
Under rack plastic bit gone. Oem rack on, useful.
Grab handles are a good idea, unfortunately my givi quick removable racks are part of the handles, ditto for the rear pegs, but that a good one too, as I never ride two up.
