Hi all. Been researching on this forum for the last couple of weeks. Had a test ride on a 2014 (13 model) with only 1300 miles. Really enjoyed the ride. The bike is fully kitted out with engine bars, heated grips, touring screen, full yamaha luggage and tank bag.

But the new model can be Had for a little more money in standard trim. I've seen many comments about the ECU mapping to improve the old engine which appears to sort that part out.

Is the difference in the new model enough to justify the paying more money for? I guess it's a personal choice but I welcome any comments.

Where in the UK? Also, I would take the newer model, yes, in standard trim it will need a center stand and rear rack, but the ES version address's this. If you don't need or want electronic suspension then go for a standard bike and kit it out yourself, there's a member on here (RandG, in Scotland) that is selling engine bars, panniers and other bits at 1/2 new price, so worth looking at.

::004:: from The West Country! Yes where abouts in the South are you?

The true '14 model (easily recognised by the fully electronic LCD inst. panel) has loads of new features over the Gen 1 model.

Standard model can be had new for £9500 otr from Fowlers of Bristol if you are quick! Thats where I got mine in June. The latest 14 model has better screen from a buffeting point of view for me anyhow but everyone is different, slightly more power due to mapping changes and engine mods, smoother, Sport mode makes it go like the dogs knackers in my opinion, cruise control, led indicators, on screen display if you fit the optional factory heated grips, new mirrors, revised seats, etc etc There is a full list of changes if you google 2014 Yam Super tenere.

Basically the factory listened to everyone's feed back and corrected the issues everyone had more or less.

However that said if the 13 model is right for you with all the extras then its your choice.

The ES will cost you about another grand from Fowlers with some colour options. The standard they had in stock a few weeks ago was Grey which I wouldn't have had but now think its a really good understated colour with the small gold detail on the forks and brake piston areas!

Whatever you go for you will be well supported on here as just about anything that may go wrong (not much really compared to a guzzi Stelvio that I had before) has been covered before and sorted more or less by others.

It's obvious from all that is said by others that the improvements on the 2014 onwards are good. I bought a 2013 six months ago and love it and as I don't know how much better the later model is then I am happy with what I have. What I don't know doesn't bother me. Either way any S10 is a fantastic bike. As many others have said - the more you ride it the more you like it and that's so true ::008::

Re: Hello from UK (south) potential S10 purchase

I would say it depends on the difference and your budget.

Sure you can flash a Gen1 and probably get similar or better performance than a standard Gen2, but this will cost £150+ for e generic flash up to £400 for a custom flash on a dyno (which in my experience made a lot of difference) but IMO unless there is at least £1,000 difference I would go for the Gen2.

The "Gen2" bike is a little better in a few ways and will be worth a bit more when you come to sell it on, probably a good £500 more even after a few years depreciation.

My jealousy of Gen2 owners extends to:

Cruise Control - I would really like to have this

Display - I find the later display is much nicer with more information better presented and...

Display Controls - The controls being on the clocks on my Gen1 really annoys me, no idea why Yamaha did this on the Gen1 when other competitors have had bar mounted controls for years is beyond me - but they did fix it for the Gen 2

Smoother Running - My Gen1 is fairly smooth, but it seems everyone who has switched raves about the smoothness of the later bike - of course you can fit the Gen2 Clutch basket to a Gen1 but it adds cost.

As my bike is pretty well sorted it is not worth my while swapping, I have a load more power (Arrow Headers, Custom Flash) Better suspension (MCT Forks / Wilburs shock) and have all the farkles I want installed so may just add a 2014 Clutch later, but if I was buying tomorrow I would buy the later bike.

I've had both a 2012 and the 2015, Funkster, and cannot give enough praise to
the 2nd generation and the improvements Yamaha has made... with a simple hello.....

::004:: from Oklahoma. I have owned both a Gen1 (2012) and a Gen 2 (2014) Both are very capable with just some slight differences. Take your pic.

Electronic suspension, cruise control and heated grips make a good difference with the new model.

Re: Hello from UK (south) potential S10 purchase

Thanks all for the info and advice. I am at the top of my budget so the 14 reg Gen 1 with 1300 miles and all the extras is just about at the same price as a new but standard Gen 2 (deal at on yer bike). I have seen a Gen 2 with touring kit (panniers, heated grips, stand, lights) on the same site for around £1200 more and busts my budget.

I am tempted to see if the dealer will snip a bit more off the price and go for the Gen 1. If not, that could be the thing I need to change and get the Gen2. I enjoyed the test ride so either way I think I wil enjoy either of the bikes. And its my first move to a twin engine!!

So its down to me to get on and make the decision :-\

I am down in Buckinghamshire, fairly new to the area after moving from up North!! Thanks again, you have helped, lets see what the dealers will do ;D

Hi from Kent, UK. Have to say I have a pretty sorted 2013 but still occasionally feel the pull of the upgrade when I'm in the showroom. Generally whichever you choose will become your best friend!

Rather, sounds good. Not been to OYB yet but interested in the demo Sep on their site. No extras on it though. Tomorrow I hope to speak to the dealer in HW and see if he can improve the deal on the gen1. Failing that OYB and see what they can do. Once I'm sorted I will let you know.

Re: Hello from UK (south) potential S10 purchase

Mine came from Slocombes Yamaha in Wembley who where really good, best deal around at the time, delivered to my door at the exac time I wanted (after holding the bike on a small deposit as I was about to go on holiday when I struck the deal) and even threw in the parts for the first service FOC....

...but with S10 buying I think it comes down to who has a pre-reg / ex-demo / old model in stock at the time you are buying.

::004:: from Scotland.

I'm happy with my 2011 model and the way I have it farkled up, so I have just addressed what to me is the major desirable lacking by having an MCCruise cruise control unit installed.
