Hi everyone, my name is Nate and I'm from Minnesota, waving to all my fellow riders.

Current ride is a heavily modded 2005 Suzuki SV1000S. Been to 28 states on it. I enjoy building my own farkles whenever possible and I've been enjoying the diy stuff I've been reading here on the forum.

I'm not an off road guy but there's plenty of dirt roads around here. Kinda sucks really enjoying a paved road, cross a county line and it turns to dirt.

Now it's time for an upgrade. Since I'm here it's safe to say the Super Tenere is pretty much what I've decided to get. Sounds like a perfect platform for touring or checking out the local roads as well.

If I may start with a question. I'm eyeing a new 23 and a used 18 with low miles. Is there anything different besides color between the two? I've seen talk about gen 1 and gen 2. Is the 23 still gen 2?
Ok I guess that's 2 questions

Take care everyone and ride safe ✌

Thank you for the clarification on the gen 1 & 2 split. I wasn't sure if it changed to gen 3 at some point and I just hadn't read about it yet.

I have already learned quite a bit about these bikes from lurking the last few weeks

The '23 will be an ES, no questions. The '18 might be an ES. A quick look at the back shock will tell you immediately. Plain knob: non-ES. Wire harness on top: ES. "I" would go with the ES. Especially with your roads changing so quickly. The ES allows suspension adjustments on the fly.
Doesn’t 19 and up come with slightly more heavy duty wheels ?
I think you're right; the blue rims started it. But he also says he's not an off-roader. I hop curbs daily and I haven't dinged up anything . . . . yet.

Welcome Nate,

As long as they're both ES than they are the same bike. Totally your call but a low mileage '18 should save you a bunch of cash over a new '23. Good news is you'll enjoy either of them.

Sorry guys I forgot the earlier models had non ES available as well. The 18 is an ES so apples to apples
And no heavy off roading in my future. My wife has a Honda NC750X dct and only started riding a few years ago. It's a street bike but may get slightly more aggressive tires for tooling around the area and better grip if we end up on dirt.

Surprisingly the leftover 23 is only 1200 more than the 18 (and that's listed prices, haven't talked to either dealership yet) so such is my conundrum...

So, that's not much of a difference. Does the '18 have more "extras"? 'Cuz @Donk is right on both counts.

The 18 has Yamaha panniers and what appears to be an aftermarket skid plate. It has 9900 miles on it. The 23 only has a stock photo listed so I'm not aware of any accessories. Will be calling both tomorrow to get more info.

I will admit I like the blue on the 18 over the graphite on the 23, but that's just from pictures. Won't make final judgement on color until seeing both in person.

Have to see what fees they are adding on. I bet the '23 gets a lot more expensive. I like the OEM Yamaha panniers and that's got to be a grand right there.

Actually, "old style" boxes and particularly their mounting hardware is unobtanium nowadays.
