Hello, I am a motorcycle addict and I suffer from multiple bike disorder. I took up motorcycling in 1998. I like solo touring, and I like to get off the beaten trail, and I have a taste for big adventure bikes.

I haven't ordered a Super Tenere. I just got a new bike in 2010, the Honda NT700V, and it seems wildly impractical to get a new bike two years in a row. And there was that prototype Honda V4 shaft drive adventure bike in the news last fall, and the new Triumph shafty sport tourer that's supposedly coming soon. The world is full of promise, suddenly. But if no other choices arrive (or even if they do), it's very possible that I'll order a S10 next winter. So I've decided to join up now so I can follow along and see how all you early adopters get on, this year.

Besides the NT, I still own a 1992 Yamaha TDM850, which is a sweet, sweet motorcycle, even if it is a bit long in the tooth these days. And I put 65K on my last new bike, which was a DL1000 V-Strom - I liked the Strom very well but got sick to death of dealing with the chain. The thing that really tore it for me and the Strom, was having a chain go south with only 8000 miles on it, in the middle of a cross country trip in 2007. That was my last tour on the Strom. Not to mention replacing the clutch basket twice, and dealing with endless small annoying issues like water pump seals and clutch slave cylinder leaks and what-have-you. In 2008 and 2009 I did my touring on a 1994 VFR750, which was a thrilling bike and reliable too. The VFR wasn't bad, comfort-wise, but I did miss the way the Strom fit me, and I decided to get something with a shaft drive. I was hot for the VFR1200F but decided it didn't have enough tank range to suit me, and for that kind of dosh I wanted more comfort. Considered an FJR but decided it was too large. I want a moderately sized machine, with a shaft drive, that will cheerfully handle what passes for "roads" here in Michigan (aka the land of car eating potholes), do a little gravel as needed, carry me cross country in comfort and rail the twisties when I get there. And I don't want to spend half my riding season fixing it. Is this too much to ask?

Yes, I'm a woman, but I have ridiculously long legs and can easily flat foot adventure bikes. I do, however, have short arms and torso for someone with such legs, so a lot of bikes are quite a reach to the bars even though flat footing is no problem. Adventure bike ergos tend to suit me perfectly.

Welcome aboard.
I've had MBD since I could afford two! (1972)
And you're not the only state that can make holes in pavement....we're masters! Penndot designs them into all pavement jobs.

Welcome along Elizilla,

Hope you find everything you want on the site.

I only suffer MBD when changing bikes. No room or time to pay enough attention to two.

Currently have DL1000 with a chain oiler. Once you have an oiler you never go back. 8)
unless a reliable shaft drive option comes up that is ;)

Cheers
Graham

Welcome aboard!

I currently own two VStroms, a 2005, DL650 and a 2004, DL1000. I must admit, they both have operated flawlessly and each have over 20K miles. I do agree the chain thing is a bit irritating, but I haven't been able to part with the bikes. They are really functional for the commute to work, quick trip to the store, or a long trip to another state. Actually, we're (girlfriend and I) about to head out, in June, on a 2300 mile trek through the state of California on the Stroms stopping at all the scenery on the way.

There was a period of time when I was looking to replace the DL1000, with either the FJR, ST1300, VFR. I eventually purchased an ST1300, drove it for 1.5 years, but sold it and returned to my Strom. Those sport touring bikes are just too big and bulky form my taste. Never thought I'd part with my Strom, but an S10 advertisement caught my eye, and within 30 days my deposit was made. I'm so confident the S10 will be a fine replacement for Old Faithful, I have already offered it to my kid, who I'm sure, will enjoy many years of fun. Hopefully, he will become as addicted to Adventure Touring as myself, and I'll gain a riding partner!

Right on, now I think the female to male ratio is actually above zero. :-\

Welcome elizilla, and I completely agree with your sentiment about the "world full of promise, suddenly." It is definitely a great time for adventure bikes.

Welcome aboard elizilla! You will find that many of us here suffer from "MBD"!!! And of course, depending on where one lives and what the winter is like, many also suffer from PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome).

Thanks for the friendly welcome!

ptfjjj, Venture, I'm surprised that there aren't more woman here - the bike is tall, but not THAT tall. Maybe there are some lurking, that you don't know about.

GrahamD, the chain oilers were my 2009 experiment. That spring I actually bought and installed three different ones, on the Strom, the TDM, and the VFR, and did a careful, detailed comparo. The Strom got a Hawke Oiler, the TDM got a Scott Oiler, and the VFR got a Pro Oiler. Of the three I liked the Pro Oiler best, though the Scott Oiler was also acceptable. The Hawke Oiler was terrible. I intend to put chain oilers on any future chain bikes I own - a good chain oiler is a marvelous thing. The guy I sold the VFR to was old skool and didn't want the Pro Oiler, so it's sitting on my bench waiting to be installed on something else.

Bugsy, when I had only 20K on my DL1000 I felt the same way. I really liked riding that bike. But by 65K, after five chains and way too many hours spent rooting around under the clutch cover, I felt differently. :( OTOH, the DL650 doesn't have the clutch problems; it is supposed to be bulletproof. And in 2006 I rode a borrowed DL650 across Europe and found I was quite happy on it. If I hadn't replaced the DL1000 with the NT700V, I was planning to get a DL650 and put a chain oiler on it.

The S10 seems like a bike that could cure my MBD. Or perhaps it would just allow me to add completely different machines to the collection. I went scooter racing last fall and had a blast, so now I have my eye on an electric scooter. And it would be fun to own a very small dualsport...

Welcome Elizilla!

Where abouts in Michigan are you located? I'm in Grand Rapids and ordered my Tenere from the dealer in Holland.

I received an email from them last night stating that a Tenere was available for viewing at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids. Unfortunately I got the email too late :(

I understood all of your post except the above sentence. I don't follow...

:D

Yeah, this from a guy that will be buying his very first new plated bike (I have bought several offroad-only bikes new) in 28 years of riding. I have always tended to buy used to save a bit. Amazing how many bikes are out there one or two years old with less than 1,000 miles on them. Buy at a savings and it pays for all the aftermarket updates I want to do (or they sometimes come with them). Still, the call of the Super Tenere I could not resist so ordered in December after spending 9 hours crawling around on the two at the Seattle show and eyeing the special import in the Altrider booth.

I agree that it will be interesting to see what bikes are out by next winter and how the Super Tenere is received by everyone, how it performs, reliability, etc. thought we already have good examples of all of those from our friends across the pond.

My wife is 5'11" and all legs which is nice for reaching the ground on tall bikes (read: dual sports). She's found most stock bar locations comfortable where I usually put 1.5" of rise on most things (I'm 6' with tall torso). Usually she doesn't like riding my bigger bikes due to weight (she's always owned lighter bikes of 450lbs or less) so it will be interesting to see how she feels about the weight of the Super Tenere and if she wants to take it for a spin. I might lose some seat time if she likes it! Ha.

Welcome!

I'm 5'11" as well. I don't think I've ever had a bike under 450lbs. The TDM is not far above that, but other than that, well, prior to the V-Strom I had three different Honda V65 Sabres, which are big muscle standards from the 80s, they are monsters even before I kitted them with full Givis. But in 2006 and 2007 I lost a huge amount of weight, and I had some health issues. (I passed out twice, while dealing with the V-Strom's chain, on that trip in 2007, and I felt weak and uncoordinated. It was scary.) Suddenly the bikes I had felt awkward - I certainly didn't want to get anything heavier. And I wanted the shaft drive. And until 2010 the choices were just not there. I was trying to pick between a DL650 and a BMW, when for 2010 they announced the VFR1200F and the NT700V. I was sooo hot for that VFR, but alas, the tank range... So I got the NT, which is great but I do miss the Strom, which fit me so well, and I miss my 1994 VFR and my V65s - love those V4 motors, they are a thrill. Now this year we're going to get the S10, and maybe the next year we'll get that Crosstourer. So many choices! And I have gained back a little weight, just the right amount I think, because I feel healthier. Wheeee!

Katherine,

My wife is sorta interested, but at 5'6" it is a little too tall for her. I believe that she will get a NT once her PC800 is worn out.
