Hello. My name is Albert H. and I log on as AH.

This is my first post to this form, so . . . an introduction is required.
I have been riding bikes for 55 years, and have several vintage bikes. My current highway bike is a 2006 BMW R1200GSA. Before that I had a 1985 BMW R80 GS. I rode it till it wore out, and it never let me down.

Not so the R1200. It has left me stranded twice. The last time was last year, in the middle of Saskatchewan. Yes I am a Canadian, and I live in Edmonton Alberta. Both times it was a failure of the final drive. This is a known problem for 2006 to 2010 R1200 motorcycles. BMW refuses to recognize there is a problem. That final drive was taken apart 3 times, and last year I replaced it completely. The bike has 45k miles on it. Bring Money in a Wheelbarrow is the BMW motto. Or just call it a Big Money Wagon.

Don't misunderstand. The bike handles great, carries everything I want, and goes anywhere a big bike can. It sits right for my 6 foot frame, and my spouse likes being on the back. But I have lost confidence in the bikes reliability, and in the BMW dealer network.

So that is why I am here. I am hoping the Tenere might be a replacement for my beemer. Also I need to add, that I pull a Mini Mate trailer for camping trips. Now I know what you are thinking. That is why the final drive failed. I don't buy it. The mini mate has a tongue weight of 35 lbs and is less than 300 lbs loaded. And I am not an aggressive rider.

I love to ride, but I need to have confidence in the machine I am on. Tenere anyone?

Albert

Albert I am in AB as well. There are quite a few of us on here that are. As for your BMW I have read several reports of riders that had problems with their 1200GS bikes and they got rid of them to get a Tenere and swear by the Tenere. I haven't had mine long as I bought it late in the summer last year. From everything I have seen these bikes are reliable as they come. Extremely very little in the way of bad reports from owners. Many are up to and over 100,000 miles with not much more than normal services performed. The engine has a rattly sound to it, but it doesn't bother it any. The mechanical noise from it is way less than my Harley makes. If you do a search on here there are many posts about how happy the guys are that came to the Tenere from a 1200GS and swear they won't ever go back to BMW. On the opposite side there are others that have always wanted a BMW have traded their Tenere's for the GS. If you want to go look at one check out E&S Motorsports in Fort Saskatchewan. Super friendly and good to deal with bunch of people. They keep Teneres in stock all the time if you want to go see one.

Welcome aboard. I just met another forum member who came from the GSA after having separate dealers replace his final drive. He went through FOUR of them!

No Tenere yet.
AH, I am in Edmonton as well and if you have any questions I would be more then willing to meet up with you in my spare time and tell you about my experience with the Tenere. I am considerably younger then you by the sounds of it but enjoy taking trips on my bike alone or with someone else as well. I mostly enjoy bike camping but not against hotels as well. Private msg me or msg on here ill check back in a few days.

I bought my Tenere last year its a 2017 and did 8700km no issues. Plan on doing more this year if i can get away. Time will Tell.

Albert if you do decide on one E&S has a couple leftover 2016 models left. One is a yellow anniversary model. They have them marked down a couple thousand. I stopped by there on my way into the city this morning.
