Just an FYI, I just ordered a set of the PIAA LD530's from the PIAA outlet store for $209 with Free shipping. Deal is supposed to be for only next 24 hours. Thought somebody else might want a set. Also, got the Yamaha bracket (under headlight) from Revzilla for $42 with free shipping, so am looking at $251 for the whole shebang. ::022::

Are these daytime running lights? If not, does anyone recommend a good daytime running light that can be mounted to the bike or the Altrider crash bars? I was on a ride this weekend and more than one GS came up behind me with multiple bright white daytime lights that definitely made them get noticed.

No, they are not daytime running lights. They are lights to see with.

You noticed the GSs with the bright lights because they were being asshats and annoying traffic. And because you ride a motorcycle and naturally see bikes as well as other traffic. Conspicuity lights are a FAIL. The people that will see you anyway, still see you, now they are just now annoyed that your lights are aimed incorrectly too.

The people that won't see you, also don't see the 20 ton, bright red Fire Truck, with all lights strobing and siren blaring. You don't even cross the threshold into conscious thought to them because you are not a threat to their safety. They will still pull out in front of you, so EXPECT them to and behave as if they always will, even when they make eye contact and look right at you.

I SEE YOU, could care fuck all if you see me. ::009::

If you want some lights so people will see you, look into various LED lights that have dimmer circuits. At least that way, you can run them dim during the day and full on at night so they provide useful light past your high beams, which is how they should be aimed, down the road past your high beams. Coincidentally, this aiming is also up into oncoming driver's eyes, so will provide what you think you need during the day, but it's not necessary to blind them by running them on full power. The 530s are LED, but IIRC and not dimable and the fog pattern would be a waste, as the aim to be useful would not be the aim into driver's eyes. The driving pattern would work better for that. And you can spend a LOT less money if you just want to annoy traffic, rather than see at night, and still get the perceived results.

Try here, there is a range of different lights and some good info. The vendor is a good guy and known seller that direct imports. http://ledrider.com/

Even running high beams in the daytime blinds oncoming traffic and don't even get me started on those F#%&!#& headlight modulators, hate them.

Frankly I too am more concerned about MY being able to see (at night) than the kooks in the kages. With that said, some of the dimmable LED's turned down in the daylight couldn't hurt any. Like was stated above, people fail to see 20 ton firetrucks (including "hi viz" ones) covered with flashing lights! Those of us on two must just always keep our eyes open. Ride like everyone in a car is a homicical maniac who wants to kill you, and the only reason they haven't is because you are invisible and you'll have the right attitdue ::013::

I found the stock lighting to be fine except in turns. In turns, even the bright mode doesn't illuminate the road ahead adequately (or at all). In particular, I'd have to slow down to 15 MPH to safely take certain on-ramps in the pitch dark.

So I got the PIAA fog lamps just for this purpose, for their low aim and wide angle, and use them almost exclusively when taking such turns. It works pretty well, but I really miss my old bike's light that turned with the handlebars and thus always pointed at the road ahead.
