The LC GS started the fugly adv look, KTM one upped them and now Harley has its eyes on the prize.

These three pictures just kill me, The top two are supposed to be real adventure bikes and they have road racing tires on and the street bike company has real knobbies.
Back to the real debate--- I think Harley has done a great job with the way they stayed true to their customers with a bike that might sell to their kind of crowd. I hope it does great for them.

it could be uglier .... nice windshield , and Harley builds good seats ..... but how much does it weigh?
has a robo cop looking head light , seat looks nice and flat , windshield shows some adjustability. ergo's look good from what the photo shows . BMW style tubeless wheels . it could be a good bike .I need to look away , starting to like it .

Personally? I think it looks like a refugee from a Cylon casting call

I think HD is coming to the game years too late and only HD diehards would get into this beast as an ADV option.
While looking at all the serious ADV contenders available today they all have a similar theme in common that HD missed completely. Weight
I cannot imagine having to pick that fat girl off the ground after dropping, its got to be heavier then the 1250GS?

It does look like it is built like a tank. I don't believe most adventure riders today are thinking, gee it would be great to find an even heavier bike to take off pavement.

One positive, It might broaden the HD crowd and other peoples view about ADV motorcycles.

I think H-D is fighting for their life. They're trying to separate themselves from Indian, and attract a new fan base, by coming up with something "new & fresh".

You're right there. A lot of us bitch about weight.

I tend to agree with you. But. . . . to pick that as your ADV bike, over the current proven options out there . . . . those might be some odd folk.

Also, lets be honest: Polaris is kicking harleys ass.

Polaris is a global company with success in multiple segments and a proven record of strong offroad engineering.

Indian has become a serious brand that is stealing a lot of business from harley.

You are right that harley is fighting for its life.

Polaris has got marketing and performance down. Durability not so much. As a currant owner of multiple Polaris products, If your not mechanically inclined, owning one out of warranty is risky.

I'd be very pleased to see this become a surprise home-run bike for Harley. Nothing good comes from the demise of Harley.

Never owned one, never interested in riding one. But strong motorcycle companies are good for everyone.

I would love to see the demise of RUBS. Then Harley would be selling bikes to real riders instead of squids. I don't see Jochen Zeitz turning the company around. Time will tell.......

The design of the Pan American is not thought out very well. First tipover and the pipe, sidecover, and footpegs will be damaged. The aftermarket should have some really cool protection products for this bike.

anyone remember Buell , Harley flushed it down the toilet of history . innovation in its product designs harley could have leaned on learned from , but Harley knows best .....
I took my Tenere to the local Harley dealer for inspection took them an hour to find someone with enough inseam to do a test ride ..... they cater to the inseam challenged .
and the photo shows that is not a normal Harley(push rod ) big twin but unit constructed , so may be lighter . as for fall over damage it is no different than the 1290 with the exhaust hung on the side .
last time I looked my Tenere is no light weight. to me it is the head light fairing that gives it a fat look .
it could be a competitive ADV bike , price ,weight ,power etc. will determine all.

It's a huge stereotype to call all harley owners RUBS. Many are serious riders who rack up huge miles on their bikes. I had a Road King for nearly a decade and it was the best two up touring bike that I've ever owned by far because the wife was happy with how comfortable it was. In fact, she didn't want to ride on my S10 at all after that bike. The hardest part about doing an IB on it was trying to stay awake as it was too darn comfy.

Versatile too...

Two-up touring mode

Solo mode

I tipped over my S10 at about 3 mph and the footpeg snapped in half. Dropped my AT at a standstill and the turn signal and hand guard both broke and the side cover got rashed. Hardly unique to Harley to need some protection.

Not all are. Just more are than not. Any rider that racks up huge miles can be a RUB or Squid. Just as a serious rider who does not put on as many miles.

You need to come down here on a friday evenin at the Harley mechanic shop and explain to the Harley boys what RUB is.
A real Harley mechanic knows exactly what a RUB and Squid is. They are the main demographic of Harley owners.

squid I understand but what is "RUB or RUBs"?
if I was going to carry my wife with me on a touring or just a regular basis , I would have an electra glide , street glide . but she don't ride so I don't need a suburban to ride by myself.
