Guys thought I’d share this with you. I’m riding a First edition (made 2010, purchased 2012). I cover around 7K a year. Hard start always been an irritating intermittent problem. Seems like any issue – rain, dew, below par battery, spark plugs >5K, and I can get a starting problem (and when I do she will not start but floods badly). When I have the problem, I charge battery get plugs changed and no problem for around 6 months. I changed the plugs (for the first time) myself a couple of weeks ago (after 6k) and the photo shows the result. The plug on the left had been sitting in water. This plug was on the side stand side and when outside on an overnight ride she’s always left on the side stand, and this is the time when the start problem tended to happen. I noticed the cylinder head cover has a rim on its outside edge and that the top surface of the cover is accessible to rain. Likely water reaching the cylinder head cover runs down and fills the lowest plug recess. Someone suggested that one shorting coil could cause problems (any comments). I hope my starting issues are over. I put a little soft cover between the front of the tank and the forks now to stop water reaching the cylinder head cover when she’s left out overnight (which I’ve done deliberately for a fortnight) and so far, no starting problem. Time’ll tell, but I feel more confident I’ve got to the root cause this time. I saw a similar set of plugs on a Youtube video on spark plug change. Did Yamaha come up with a hard start fix or was it all a leg pull?
