I forgot my airhawk seat pad at home when i left on my recent trip. After the first 800km i can sit no more. Had to make a plan. So i came up with this. I removed the back 2 rubbers like so

Then i installed the plastic "spacer " on the high position and slid the back "hook" of the seat in the space below the slot it usually would go in to

Then i push down firmly on the front of the seat till it latches. I did not bang it in there, just a firm push
In this photo you can see how much the back went down

Did not have to put in any spacers etc.. Worked awesome for 5010km
It dropped the back of the seat by about an inch

You k ow this actually works really well. You had me a bit confused when you said remove the two rear rubbers. You actually meant the two middle rubbers I think. I did this and moved the spacer to the high setting and now perfect. It's like Yamaha meant this as an adjustment procedure.

I think I'll remove my spacers and try it, too. I'm up for anything. The seat is the last weak point for me.

I just tried this mod, quite a gap between tank and seat plus seems to be a bit of pressure on the seat lock, maybe not good. Will try it on the road soon, cost nothing = :)
I think you may have it wrong then. There are six rubber spacers, remove the two middle ones. Move the plastic spacer used for height adjustment to the "high" position. Now put the seat back in as per normal and it rests nicely on the two back spacers. It should lock in properly and rest on the nylon stop. If you have it wrong there will be a gap and it will move around even though locked.

Yes I did. Thought I read somewhere that the "hook" goes in the slot under the normal slot. Might try again.
It does. If you go in the top slot your seat will rock. You have to make a concerted effort to get the hook in the bottom on the first time you try it.

I already had my seat nice and level and comfy, but it was kind of rigged up junky. I just undid my junky job and tried this set up. ::012:: this may be the best stock seat set up ever.
Thank you.

Yes you are correct. My first wright up actually sucked. You seem to have figured it out though. The second set from the back is removed. The seat is awesome now

Gotta get a Russell... Your @ss will thank you!!
Thats my ultimate goal but I'm gonna have to wait till winter. I can't let good summer riding days go by while my seat is gone.

In the meantime, this method is working pretty good. I've got a 2000+ mile trip coming up at the beginning of July and I'll really be able to put it through it's paces.

You are welcome ::008::
It all happened by accident. I forgot to put the rubber spacers back in my haste to get the seat fixed to continue on my trip ::015::

So I am giving this mod a try. The seat is very flat but there is a huge gap between the tank the front of the seat. The seat is snug and the latch works great as I added a few washers under the metal bracket. Is that gap how it is supposed to be and can that cause problems with water?
Shouldn't be a gap if you do it properly.

I am confused (easy I know) It seems the original description describes removing some rubbers and making up some sort of plastic spacer as well as the seat having to go into a different position.

Others seem to just remove the middle rubber bungs and report the same benefit.

Are we talking about two different mods here

Does the mod where you just replace four of the rubber bungs with the pillion ones leave a similar gap

As they are about £6 ($10) for all four I have just ordered some, seems an easier solution.

Yes that is correct. There is quite a big gap. I drove 12 hours (one day) in monsoon type rain. Even had to park the bike next to the road because rain was too much to carry on. I did not notice the gap causing me any trouble with regards to water. But that was me. It may or may not be a problem but i dont think the seat in its stock position is "waterproof"
You can see in one of the pics i can shove half my hand in there.
I apologize for the bad instructions, but one of the inmates here explained it pretty well
