In NZ we are not permitted to change from Halogen bulbs to either LED or HID.
So what Halogen bulbs to people recommend? Can I safely go up from 55w?

Can't say for sure, but, not legally. The max low beam over hear is 55w, and high beam is 65w. Back in the day on my FJ, I switched in a 55/100 halogen. No issues since I wasn't stupid enough to ride around in traffic on high. But, the Tenere projection system isn't the same. There is no hi or low in reality. There's a physical barrier that cuts off the top of the beam on "low". On "high", the barrier is raised, and you get the whole beam. Get close to a wall, and cycle the switch. You'll see what I mean, (if you haven't done so already) Besides, my FJ had a glass lens. I think a 100w bulb would melt half the front end of the bike.

I use Osram bulbs from a local auto parts store that provides a 1 year warranty. I keep the receipt and go back 2-3 times a year for free replacements as they just don't last very long. Stay with 55W, or risk melted connectors and wiring.
Add more light fixtures if you need better lighting.

Philips, Sylvania or Osram H7 should all be available in NZ.

Silverstar Ultra were the whitest with the best cast in my experience, but they're not that cheap and required replacement too often.

Should Yamaha refresh the S10 it almost certainly would have LED headlights. Is the law such that only vehicles manufactured with them are legal and aftermarket replacement is forbidden?

Often we don't have choices, if a bulb fails & we pick up whatever we can get from a fuel station/auto store. When able to choose, I usually go for Osram Night Breaker 200 (55W) which is their top end halogen bulb, at least here in the UK .......... https://www.osram.co.uk/apps/gvlrg/en_GB.

NZ regs require compliance with manufacturer's recommendations, so I guess this ties you to a 55W max, but the 'brightness' & 'colour temperature' questions will be down to local interpretation ......... https://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/in-service-wof-and-cof/motorcycles/lighting/headlamps.

BTW, best replace both while you are at it.

I disagree. Replacing both bulbs at the same time has left me without lights, as they both burned out nearly the same time, before I noticed one was out the other quit too. I check them before each ride, 2 lights shining on my garage wall. Not always possible on a trip but usually I can see them reflected from the stopped vehicle ahead. I replace one at a time, and carry a spare in my tank bag.

Hi to all!
From what I heard I can share that due to the issues related with lighting I use to carry a spare set with the bike in case I need them. In my country I do not see any law with light restriction, so I end up installing LED ones and I do like more the bright white color.

I've got a pair of Osram off-road H7 lights going on five or six years now, They are a higher output, they did something tricky, not a wattage increase but a greater light output. Pretty nice. Went through a bunch of bulbs in the first few years, though I did have that wiring fault they corrected during that time frame. I wouldn't change to anything that wasn't an Osram at this point.

Is this what you bought? 2-PK Osram H7 64210NL Night Breaker Laser 55w 12v Automotive Bulb 2 pack is $34.99. . I got to try something else. If I didn't have a light bar. It would suck to ride at night. I'd pay more if I had to.

Could be. Mine specified off-road use though. I was looking for durability. Off-road was the key for me, brighter was gravy. I've got a pair of Rigid driving lights for Bright.

Must be one heck of a expensive citation you get there for a mechanical violation such as lights to stick with halogens!

I personally find it hard to believe with the projector style lamps on a tenere the guy wouldnt even be able to notice the mod to LED bulbs. The upgrade to LEDs is well worth a "fix it" ticket here if for some reason the guy could even tell the lights were modded on mine.

One thing that is very clear with leds is the color and brightness! so it can easily be cuestioned. Just looking to the OEM or Halogen lights they are yellowish and not bright wite as the leds are.

It's all in the "temperature" of the light. For example 6.5K is a brighter white than a light with a temperature of 4K.

Yes, but even though the light looks and you can see it different! Have you seen a LED with Halogen temperature? I have not, probably because I'm allways looking for led with 6K color. will a led bulb get the halogen temperature?

Good question. I know that leds come in all colors. I think that when you pick white, its a bright white; no yellow. All of my fluorescents bulbs are 6.5k. I haven't had to replace my OE bulbs yet, so . . . .
