I fully recognize that I live in the wrong state to hold these sort of social/political opinions, and that's something I intend to correct eventually when my children are off to college in another five years.
For eight years I also lived in MD. Once a new job gave me an excuse to move the idea of staying in MD was never a thought. The state had just passed their "Saturday Night Special" law, and it was a final straw for me. Moved to VA, had my CCW license a couple of months later and never once missed the old People's Republic. I'm sure they never missed me either.

Ahhh, the choices you folks have to make... In the UK it's illegal to carry a knife in public with more than a 2" blade for heavens sake ! Firearms are a no, no, although you can get a shotgun licence for use on private land, but that is now heavily policed and you have to pass quite stringent checks. No, we are just left with abusive gestures and harsh sarcasm to protect ourselves against the nasty world.

The Emperor of Japan was asked why Pearl Harbor and not the mainland? His reply was there is a gun behind every blade of grass on the mainland.

As nice of a quote as that is, there's no historical record that confirms that Hirohito, or Yamamoto, or any other prominent figure in the WWII era Japanese government, ever made that quote, though more often than not it's attributed to Yamamoto. I'm not posting this either for or against carrying a gun; only in the interests of historical accuracy.

I carry when riding, but only concealed with a permit. It is perfectly legal to carry open in Colorado (USA). I just don't Open carry, so as not to draw attention. Please support your right to defend yourself and loved ones! ::009::

Actually, you can carry up to 3" non locking folding knife without any reason, it is your right. (pubs, schools, court rooms and football grounds etc excepted)
Over 3", or locking, or fixed blade and you need to prove "good reason".

Unfortunately, getting the three phase 32A supply and water cooling at 6 liters a minute overloads the on board alternator and radiator and top box storage capacity. ;D

RCinNC - We all make the choice. I teach a lot of situational awareness, both for armed and un-armed daily life, (informally). Being aware of your surroundings will keep you out of trouble quite a bit. The USMC also taught me a lot about weapons of opportunity and the mindset that I'm never really un-armed, it's just a matter of what's around and can be used to deal with the situation.

As I told a security guard at a casino/gas station a couple of months back, "You see my helmet as a disguise, but the moment I take it off and have it in my hand, I now have a deadly weapon." I thought I would take the opportunity to open his eyes to the potential for someone to beat the heck out of him with a helmet and that maybe making people take off helmets to use the restroom has it's drawbacks. From the look on his face, it was clear he had never considered that possibility. He looked more closely at my helmet, and I showed him how we typically hold it by the chin bar, and how easy it is to swing that with the top of the helmet as a cudgel. His only comment was a slow, "That'd leave a mark." I think I made my point. ;D
I thought after 911 when they banned sharp objects on air flights even toe nail clippers how many things could be used as a sharp deadly tool without no one ever being aware.
Ever break a compact disc in half, damn thing can be as sharp as a razor and easy to hold, head to the planes restroom with your Sony Discman take out the CD break it in half and your now a danger with a deadly sharp tool.

Before 9/11 nobody ever thought of box cutters as a weapon.
Virtually anything can be made into a lethal weapon. Hands and feet have probably killed more people than everything else combined. It's just a matter of training.

Before 9/11 Americans didn't believe a hijacker would deliberately crash the plane, making a political or religious statement, but expected that they would only make demands and the odds of the passengers surviving, especially over US territory, were pretty high.

I suspect that today, the odds of a hijacker not being attacked by the passengers, despite the potential for individual injury or death, is very low. There is no longer an expectation of safety for passive passengers, but rather an expectation of death, regardless of actions taken by the passengers. So nothing to loose by attempting to stop the hijackers.

This has wandered a bit off topic.

Some relevant points have been made about carry on the bike. Both from the aspect of physical injury from hard objects being carried during a crash, as well as the legal angles and issues that vary from State to State and Country to Country. Needs are something we individually perceive. Understanding your actions and choices have corresponding personal, legal and moral obligations is also a very Good Thing™.

A sidecar rig with a MG42 would be nice, but that's for the BMW crowd.
