Initial setup: I placed the low and high speed compression settings dead in the middle of their adjustment. I set sag for 57mm. We adjusted rebound to allow the bike to raise in a controlled manner without over-traveling. Ride height is set to stock.

Ride report: I did ~80 miles of my "usual" roads. The only way I can describe this shock is "amazing and ridiculous". The rear end of the bike is just so smooth and composed. The damping is amazing. The bike is on rails. Just set it into the turn and twist the throttle. It really is that simple. The amount of traction is unbelievable. I was dusting my buddy on his Multistrada 1200S in the turns. He was having to cheat and use his 50% horsepower advantage to keep up. This bike now officially handles better than my previous sportbikes. I am in love. This shock is a MUST HAVE.

I leave for a ~1500 mile trip through the Adirondacks/Montreal on Thursday. That should provide the final ride testing to firm up the prototype. This will give me a chance to ride it with luggage, without, hopefully a little dirt road action, touring and sport riding. Full gauntlet.

Spy photos to follow once Stoltec Moto watermarks them.

I took the bike for another ~120 mile ride today. I through in as much gravel as I could find.

On road:
This shock is just "stupid good". My rear tire looks like it did a track day today. The edges are feathered right to the tread edge. I can see the rubber bluing from the heat. I would liken this shock to a "Superglue Dispenser" at this point. Just pitch the bike into the turn and roll on the throttle. It really is that simple.

Off road:
Very nice. The back end remained very composed and smooth. Traction was predictable through my feet and wrist. The ride was extremely smooth through washboards and the rear soaked up holes with aplomb.

Immediate future:
I depart for a ~1500 mile trip through the Adirondacks and some of Canada Thursday. I will be back Sunday. If my impressions remain, Nick should have all of the information necessary to start taking orders.

You guys NEED this shock. I can't believe how GOOD this bike is.

Pretty similar to my assessment of the Ohlin's.

Regardless of choice it is clear that the fact remains; the single best investment above all else on a bike to improve not only its performance but its function comes in this exact order;

1 - Improve the rider

2 - Get the suspension properly set up

3 - everything else

So true. Guys drop $2k on horsepower mods. $1500 worth of suspension will make the bike untouchable in the twisties. I am not kidding. This bike is AMAZING in the turns with aftermarket goodies. Like I said, it is this simple:

Pitch it into the turn, roll on the throttle.

No more concerns about bumps. No understeer, no oversteer. Point it at a line and open the throttle.

Trail braking? On an adventure bike? I have the feathered and blued front tire to prove it!

Absolutely awesome.

We need to hook up next month as I pass by your area!!!

We can both swap off each other's bike and compare some notes!!! Good for the individuals, good for the breed.

I was very fortunate that when I started my race career I had a great teacher/mentor who would not let me touch the bike from a "performance" perspective. It was rider training and learning how to read, interpret, and then communicate suspension. He made me ride bone stock stuff for the first couple months as I tested and worked on me. After this we upgraded to the good stuff, suspension wise. He made me tell the crew what was different. I was prevented from seeing the changes made and told to go out and ride, come back in, and tell them what they had done. What a learning curve!!!!

Worked on this for some time then we got Al Ludington with me who watched me ride, talked with me, sent me away to make some adjustments, etc. When he sent me back out with some riding tips, positioning cues, track info, and his tuning I had literally dropped two seconds a lap from the morning to the afternoon.

Year two was when we started with exhausts, etc. and Vance and Hines built motors from "the shop." Through my entire racing time I NEVER saw improvement as great as I did with just working on suspension and me. NEVER!

Since we all know ::006::

Prototype photos:

Installed:

Note: the reservoir slips through without having to take anything apart. This really tidied up the hose routing! You can also see the compression adjustment on the reservoir, very easy to get to.

Top:

Note: This view shows the preload collar. Operation is super easy. Penske provides a tool that inserts into the holes and you turn. It is very easy on the centerstand. The range of motion is ~4-5 holes before re-positioning the tool. Very easy. Fail-proof and lightweight.

Bottom:

Note: This view shows the rebound adjustment. Just like stock it is easily accessible with the bike on the sidestand from the right side. Just move the centerstand down a tad and access is easy. You can also see the ride height adjustment. With the shock off you extend/shorten the clevis extension and lock down with the nut. The shock will come pre-set to stock length.

Rider Clearance:

Note: Excuse my hairy legs.

Passenger Clearance:

Note: Probably should have gotten the wife's leg for this, but I didn't. So excuse my hairy leg again.

Shock Dyno Chart:

Note: For you tech junkies like me :).

You don't have to convince me, I know all too well. Did the full suspension upgrade on the FJR and it transformed the bike. Not to mention having the suspension dialed in for the rally weight I was running. At the very least I'm going to have to try and find the coin for a rear shock and stiffer spring. :-[

Great feedback........what is the spring rate (and your weight) on your Penske?

I am 250ish WITHOUT gear. I carry a small top bag with minimal contents.

My spring rate is 700 lb/in.

That's interesting since everyone has been saying the 750 lb/in OEM spring is way too light. Do you know how much installed preload is on your spring?
