I am a long time rider and have taken Goldwings and CBR's where they should never have gone. I am retiring soon and had planned on getting an African Twin. Last Sunday a coworker said he was selling his bike and that I should buy it. Nope, I want an AT and you know it. He kept telling me about it and I kept saying no. Then he said... okay, I will give you a really good "Friend Price". No, those usually aren't that good. His bike is a 2017 with 13,489 miles with Moose Racing panniers and top box with organizers in the lids, Yoshimura pipe, tall and short windshield, stock and Corbin seat, full crash bars setup and a few other small things. He said $9,000 for everything. Huh... well I went and took it for a test drive last night and wrote him a check. At 11:1 compression I figure it takes only premium gas. I will digest the owners manual, change out the fork oil and engine coolant, check the clutch and reservoir fluids too. Otherwise everything is up to date. Then put in the ABS on/off mod, belly pan and aux lights and a Quad-lock wireless charger and a few other things. Looking forward to learning and contributing to this forum. I am near Rockford, Illinois and do all my own maintenance. I need to buy a Yamaha shop manual for this thing too. Is there an electronic version on this forum?
Cheers
Guy

Welcome, from Texas. Don't worry about the fuel. Plenty of members use regular/87 without any issues. I use premium so as to get as little ethanol as possible. And during our summers it gets hot, and haulin' my fat ass around will make her "rattle" a bit if I don't keep the octane up.

That's good to know. We don't usually deal with Texas Temps up here in Northern Illinois. I was especially worried if I go to the rocky mountain states and 85 is sometimes the only thing offered. And if Temps get hot locally then I'll bump up to premium. Alcohol is in our premium gas in the corn state of IL. There are two stations that have Alcohol free gas and that's the gas that goes in my bikes come September just before Hibernation.

Welcome aboard from the DC-Baltimore area. The sand color is a bit unusual and eye catching.

As Sierra1 wrote, I only use gas when it's hot or I'm loaded down.

Welcome from Colorado!
I use regular fuel all the time.
We have mid-grade ethanol-free near me, so I use that frequently as well.

I seem to remember from my sailing days using outboard 4 stroke motors of 9.9 HP or less that in various sailing blogs, it was constantly stated that one of the worst things you could do to your engine was to mix non ethanol gas and + ethanol gas. The consensus was that this would cause any rubber products in the engine to react in a less than helpful manner and could potentially cause fuel line blockages. I don't really know if this is true, but it seemed the wisest thing to avoid that kind of mixture.

Oh, I didn't know the color was unusual! We went riding together last year but I couldn't even remember what color it was. I do like it though.

Mixing does no harm. Putting alcohol gas in an engine that wasn't made for it is pure trouble. The old rubber seals in carburetors or fuel lines would swell and not function properly. New Vitron rubber is ok with alcohol. Alcohol gas isn't a problem if you put it in and use it. The problem comes if you let it sit around for a while. They call it a phase change but what really is happening is that the alcohol separates from the gas. If left in storage it leaves white deposits on the aluminum in your carb and it doesn't clean out to well. I always switch to using pure gas come September on the bikes I don't ride a lot. In October I will siphon all alcohol gas out of the tanks and put in pure gas that's been treated with Startron or Sea foam and run the bike for a bit. I only use treated pure gas in small engines as they don't get used often enough so the danger of alcohol separation is very prevalent.
