Great Ride, Bad Ending

Last Thursday, I took the day off work, and rode the Upper Cumberland Plateau. It was a great day - perfect weather, bright leaves, and curvy roads. Exploring commenced.

Unfortunately, I rode home in an Ambulance (after a 2-day layover at Vanderbilt Hospital). Why? Stupidity. I wasn't paying attention, and rear-ended a minivan. The sun was in my eyes, and I didn't notice the brake lights in front of me, but that's a poor excuse. Just stupid.

I woke up laying on the pavement several yards away from the bike, and noticed (fighting off the shock) that my left arm felt odd. Looked down - bone protruding from my forearm. Other stuff was injured, but the left arm was worst.

EMS was on-site quickly. Those guys were great, and medicated me for the ride to Nashville. Once at the hospital, I experienced testing, more narcotics, floppy hospital gowns, excruciating pain, bones set, more narcotics, more pain, more tests, floppy hospital gowns, surgery, more narcotics. Discharged in 40 hours.

This is probably not the most violent crash I've had, but it's the one that nearly killed me. The Tenere is being appraised now. In the meanwhile, I'm healing, and reassessing.

Ouch! Heal quickly. I almost rear ended a car this summer the same way, too close in bright sun.

Sounds familiar, dude. I can identify with a lot of that, but no broken bones. that's a real bummer. Glad you came out of it. Take your time healing. I tried to push it. I'm 66, and it just takes longer than I thought it would. It's been 7 weeks for me, and I still have some sore spots. Hang in there. We're pulling for you. All the best. R ::008:: ::003::

Best wishes. The hazards of this passion. A lot of us have been through this. When you start getting mad at breaking your bike, you are on your way to recovery. Heal fast!

Dang Chris, so sorry to hear this. I'm really glad that you are going to be OK. I totally understand the hospital thing as I too have spent much time there this year. Vanderbilt is a great facility with great Doctors. Do what they tell you to do and you should heal just fine. So lucky it wasnt worse than it is. If I can do anything to help you out please let me know. Sending healing thoughts and prayers your way.

Stay in touch

Steve

Ouch! Very sorry to hear of the incident. A friend of mine did something very similar with a car a few years ago. I'm happy to report he made a full recovery. I do hope all turns out equally well for you. Heal quickly.

I pray that you have a quick recovery. As painful as it must be, I'm glad you shared the reason for the accident so we can learn from it.

Get healthy soon!

Here's wishing you a speedy recovery. Thanks for sharing. I usually have the evening sun in my eyes on the commute home. While I try and maintain a reasonable distance between me and next guy, your story is a great reminder that we have to watch out for ourselves. No one else will.
