O/k three quick Gen 2 Reflash parameter questions:

Fuel Octance rating ... here downunder petrol is generally available in three basic flavours 91 RON (Standard), 95 RON (Super) and 98 RON (Premium).

I tend to feed my beast the expensive 98 stuff but the further you go out of the city the harder the higher octance fuels are to find - when you get into the out of the outback petrol is usually only available in a grade generally known as ... "The stuff that isn't diesel" ;)

So my intention is to order the reflash set for 95 RON and accept any additional benefits from running 98 ...

Options are also available for setting a higher idle speed and a higher (race) rev limit ... The Super Tenere isn't really designed for track work  so I feel keeping both the options as standard is appropriate.

However I'm interested if there is any general disagreement with these selections ?

Over here in the USA the ECUnleashed Gen 2 re-flash is no longer fuel grade specific (the Gen 1 you could specify using high or low octane fuels), and from what I have experienced with mine you can run whatever you like in it, no problems.

You're right about the idle... No need for the "fast idle" option, though for some it might be useful to avoid any chance of stalling off-road in very tricky conditions. I haven't heard of anyone going for that option, though, at all... Ever... on a Super Tenere.

There are no benefits from running gas of higher octane than an engine needs. It just wastes money. Some think it leads to carboning up of the valves, but that is for another day. One should try to run the lowest octane you can get away with. I agree that you should have your ecu flashed for running the stuff available in the countryside, if lower octane gas is all that is out there, if they will flash it for you that way.

I went for that extra 100 RPM idle on my GenII reflash order for that same reason you mentioned. To be honest, it's darn near impossible to tell on an analog tach that small of an increase, but on the flip side I haven't stalled either on any of my back country endeavors yet, so maybe it helps. Nice to have an option like that though...

Well, there ya' go...

Just when ya' think nobody's done it, somebody has!!! ::025::

Interesting, though, Karson. One think I'd love to hear is how fast your bike, with the higher idle speed, will plug along at idle in first gear with the clutch out. Mine (without the high idle_ bops along, no stalling and smooth as silk, right at 8 MPH indicated in first with the clutch completely out and engaged, hand off the left bar.

You ever checked yours since the re-flash?

Good point - that ~8MPH is true when I'm with the wife, which fortunately/unfortunately (depending on my day/mood at the time) is how I catch myself riding a lot. I don't really remember off the top of my head what my speed is solo and under a much lighter load - when I get that chance I'll report back.

I want to say I remember seeing 10-11MPH, but not confident enough to say that's 100% true or not. Sounds like a good lunch break test here in a couple hours ::008::
