I thought I'd start a thread where actual owners of both Gen 1 (2012 - 2013) and Gen 2 (2014 and newer) can compare their impressions of the new bike versus the older one.
I wasn't feeling the love for my 2013 (Gen. 3) FJR. I always preferred getting on my '12 SuperTen than riding the FJR. So, I ended up trading it in for a 2014 SuperTen in order to get cruise control and electronic suspension. I just came home from a 60 mile ride from the dealer where I picked up the bike and here's what I noticed right away:
- To my surprise, the engine is much smoother. The throttle response is crispier. The bike feels like it's had the clutch switch mod done, i.e. no restriction in the first 3 gears and the difference in between Touring and Sport is very noticeable.
- The cockpit display looks better in person than it does in pics online. Everything is easily legible. I much prefer a digital speedometer than an anolog one with mph and km/h numbers small font. The digital tach is also easy to read. The right side LCD screen has a mileage computer that calculates instant MPG, average MPG, and fuel range. There are 3 menu pages that can be customized. Each page has 3 items that the owner can select to be displayed. There's also an ambient air temp, engine coolant temp, 2 trip meters, a trip meter that is triggered when the bike goes into reserve, and there's also a riding timer. The gear indicator shows a dash _ when the clutch is pulled in. I'm very familiar with the navigation of the menu as it's identical to the one used on the Gen. 3 FJR.
-The seat is flatter and I wasn't sliding into the tank, so the seat mod that I did on my Gen. 1 won't be needed.
- The handlebars are a bit higher and closer to the rider, so I won't be installing my 2" Rox barback risers.
- The windshield in the highest position offers very good wind protection. I think I will sill be moving my MRA X-Screen over. It looks to me if you remove the entire adjustable mounting system from the '14, I will be able to mount my MaddStad and MRA X-Screen on their place.
- The ES suspension feels plush but I haven't played with it yet.
- The cruise control from the FJR is no longer speed restricted to 82 mph. I
[/size]And the big plus, all the accessories / farkles can be moved over. For ME, the upgraded engine alone is worth the price of admission. Good job Yamaha ::022::
I'd like to hear from others who own or owned a Gen. 1 SuperTen and how it compares to their Gen. 2
