Gen. 1 SuperTenere vs. Gen. 2: Owners' impressions, post them here!

I thought I'd start a thread where actual owners of both Gen 1 (2012 - 2013) and Gen 2 (2014 and newer) can compare their impressions of the new bike versus the older one.

I wasn't feeling the love for my 2013 (Gen. 3) FJR. I always preferred getting on my '12 SuperTen than riding the FJR. So, I ended up trading it in for a 2014 SuperTen in order to get cruise control and electronic suspension. I just came home from a 60 mile ride from the dealer where I picked up the bike and here's what I noticed right away:

- To my surprise, the engine is much smoother. The throttle response is crispier. The bike feels like it's had the clutch switch mod done, i.e. no restriction in the first 3 gears and the difference in between Touring and Sport is very noticeable.

- The cockpit display looks better in person than it does in pics online. Everything is easily legible. I much prefer a digital speedometer than an anolog one with mph and km/h numbers small font. The digital tach is also easy to read. The right side LCD screen has a mileage computer that calculates instant MPG, average MPG, and fuel range. There are 3 menu pages that can be customized. Each page has 3 items that the owner can select to be displayed. There's also an ambient air temp, engine coolant temp, 2 trip meters, a trip meter that is triggered when the bike goes into reserve, and there's also a riding timer. The gear indicator shows a dash _ when the clutch is pulled in. I'm very familiar with the navigation of the menu as it's identical to the one used on the Gen. 3 FJR.

-The seat is flatter and I wasn't sliding into the tank, so the seat mod that I did on my Gen. 1 won't be needed.

- The handlebars are a bit higher and closer to the rider, so I won't be installing my 2" Rox barback risers.

- The windshield in the highest position offers very good wind protection. I think I will sill be moving my MRA X-Screen over. It looks to me if you remove the entire adjustable mounting system from the '14, I will be able to mount my MaddStad and MRA X-Screen on their place.

- The ES suspension feels plush but I haven't played with it yet.

- The cruise control from the FJR is no longer speed restricted to 82 mph. I

[/size]And the big plus, all the accessories / farkles can be moved over. For ME, the upgraded engine alone is worth the price of admission. Good job Yamaha ::022::

I'd like to hear from others who own or owned a Gen. 1 SuperTen and how it compares to their Gen. 2

Great idea for a thread Mingo! Will be picking my '14 up soon so I'll add to the comments when I get some miles in.

As far as transferring farkles, I don't think it's yet known if skidplates will transfer over, as I see the OEM one has a different part # for the 2014s. Although I believe it was Travex who has already fitted the OEM one on his '14, but I don't think he commented on if it is identical to the one he has on his '12. Can you comment on this Travex?

I have an Altrider skid plate and it will fit on new bike. The only accessory that will not fit is the Altrider side stand plate. Everything else is pretty much a direct bolt on.

Nice stable you have there Mingo!

Actually, my impressions pretty much echo yours. The feel is a bit smoother and more refined. After 1k I'll wind it up on dirt roads to find out if I've lost any of that "motor connection" that translates so well on the 12... One of several of the bike's attributes I really enjoy. With scant miles on it there's not much to report yet, but other than getting a lemon I can't imagine anything negative as it's a great machine based on a great machine.

Haven't yet seen an argument against those who believe these bikes simply get better with time.

I kept the OEM plate that I bought with the '12 on it for a more complete resale package and got a new one for the ES. I hadn't fit or measured for difference, but from appearances they seem to be the same.

Thanks for the comments about the skidplates, guys. Sorry if it gets the thread a little off track.

Mingo, I have read that the cat. converter hangs down lower on the new model and may cause interference toward the rear of the skid plates designed for the Gen1 bike. Please give an update when you go to transfer the Altrider over to the new bike, I appreciate it.

I just picked up the blue standard and with the new color and graphics the bike is beautiful!
Wind protection: better with tools free adjustment to four positions but can not be adjusted while moving. Two steps forward and one step back in the wind management department.
Engine power: quicker, smoother, sportier, and more refined, not faster. The engine still has that Tenere character.
Dash: three different screens that can be set up to the rider's needs with a total of nine different information items. Very nice.
Bar position: a little more comfortable for me at 6'.
Cruise control: standard on all the U.S. bikes and it works flawlessly.

That's about it, not a complete redesign but a better Tenere. Did I mention the new color and graphics are beautiful?

Yes, you mentioned the new color and graphics are beautiful, but I don't believe you until I see some pics!

Congrats on new bike, I have a standard blue '14 at the dealer just waiting for me to pick it up.

TommyBwell, are you offering to go get it for me? ;D Seriously, though, I ordered the bike through the dealer in Rapid City, S. Dakota, which is about 230 miles from where I live. I also need to ride down on the 2012 I'm trading in. But...temps. have been in the 30s and 40s lately, and up until we got a bit of a melt off a few days ago, we had about 2 feet of snow on the ground. Oh, and they said the heated grips I ordered for the new bike won't arrive until tomorrow. Am planning on riding down there on Friday, which means a nearly 500 mile roundtrip day for my first ride of the season. ??? It's supposed to be a balmy 60 degrees on Friday, which means it'll be about 35-40 degrees when I set off in the morning. At least I'll have heated grips both coming and going.

I go pick up my blue standard this week-end as well.
It will take me 24 hours to get there. Leave Greenwood, Indiana about 9:30 Friday,
Ride bus to Chicago to Amtrak station, wait 5 hours, board train at 6:40 p.m.,
Ride all night, get off in Cumberland, Maryland next morning, get picked up
By someone from Romney Cycles, 28 miles down to Romney, WV
Pick up bike and begin ride back to Indiana. 500 miles. Will stop in Parkersburg
On way back and overnight at Mother's house. Sounds like a great adventure, heh!

Mingo I see that your 12 has the wind deflectors on it. Could you please try one on your 14. I wonder if they will fit from my 12 to the 14 I have on order.
Thanks

Brick, the wind deflectors have a different part number than the old ones. I ordered the new part # wind deflectors for my '14, I suppose I should've waited 'til someone tried a direct swap, but I suspect the new adjustable windshield interferes with the old ones and is the reason for the new part #.

A Yamaha rep told me via phone that they are physically different in addition to being backordered, but expected shortly, possibly this week.

Had my new xt1200ze yesterday. Drove only 30 km's from dealer to home but i can say i felt as if i am riding much lighter bike compared to my 2012 xt1200z. I don't think it is because of the brand new tires, i felt the handlebar is much much lighter and easy to control especially in narrow turns. The sound is different, the handling is much easier, the LCD is easy and very functional. Today my worldcrosser kit and Garmin will be fixed and will head for a 900 km trip on weekend. Will test the cruise control and S mode during my trip but i can say my first impression is very positive.

I've been sick in bed since I picked up the bike, but I will get back to you on it. I'm switching the Maddstad and MRA X Screen for the stock '14 ES.

None. I wouldn't call it hesitation, more like restriction.. but I don't feel it on my '14 ES. My '12 has only the clutch switch mod, nothing else.
