Garmin 590lm TPMS? Opinions?

I bought the Garmin 590LM and was wondering if anyone is using the TPMS option on it. I have not yet bought the valve caps you need for it.

Specifically I would really like to know what valve stem/s are best for the front rim. Manual calls for a metal stem and all the metal stems I have seen are either angled or seem too short for the front rim and the raised flanges on it to mount the stem and then the fat Garmin cap on there. Although I could be wrong.

Only thread I could find on this subject was a bit sparse. Thank Y'all.

I have the 590 and the TPMS but I haven't had a chance to swap out the valves yet. I bought a set off Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LAJTEFW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 not sure if they will be long enough. They look short in the picture but the rubber grommet is extra in case you rim has a wider opening.

I haven't had much luck fighting the K60 to get it off the rim enough to replace the valve. I may have to take it to the shop.

Yes, I have them and bought them as a package, and they work well and the nice thing is the battery is user replaceable.

I'd like to buy a second set for my other bike, but at $70 each it's pricey, where as the package price was the GPS plus $70 for the pair.

I also use the Garmin Virb Elite and control its operation from the Zumo 590 which is brilliant.

You should be running metal valve stems. In order to fit metal valve stems to the front you will need to do some fettling with a Dremmel.

I have a 390lm and want to fit the tyre pressure monitors and Garmin say to fit to metal valve stems, does that mean the original valves have to be replaced? they are rubber where they fit into the wheel but metal where the valve is. Mingo did you just fit to the original valve stems?

The manufacturer says you should replace the valve stems with metal ones, although I have heard of people using rubber valve stems with them I wasn't prepared to take the chance, and as the metal valve stems mean altering the front wheel where the metal valve stem attaches I wasn't willing to do that either, so I dont use them.

The idea is that you are adding weight (the new cap) to the top of the valve stem, this causes more movement than usual in the rubber valve stems which can cause the rubber valve stem to fail.

I'd like to understand what kind of mod the front wheel needs to have a metal valve installed. I have the TPMS with straight metal valves to install as well.

Where the valve sits is not flat which is fine for a rubber valve as it will mold to the shape, in order to get a metal valve to sit right some material needs removing so its no longer a U shape. I am only going by what my mechanic told me as I asked him to try and fit metal valves when my tyres were last changed.

Folks, if I understand correctly, the issue is with mounting a metal valve and then attached the TPMS externally on the valve that requires some dremmeling right?

There shouldn't be a problem with installing the internal TPMS like the DORAN 360M I would think then.

Avoid Doran, the batteries are not replaceable and you will need to replace the sensors every 2 years, to the tune of $50. A long metal valve stem should clear the flange on the wheel.

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah I'm aware and will be doing my own install internally. Can you confirm that there is no hindrance from the inside?

Old thread but I thought I would update:

I finally got the tires dismounted and valves replaced. The front had no issues, plenty of room for the washer and nut to seat on the rim. The rear will require you to modify the rim or the valve. I chose the latter. I filed the washer on two sides to it would fit better in the notch on the rim,m then cranked the nut down. Time will tell if it will leak so far so good. Here are a couple of pics.
