Hi, first post, I've been riding for about 15rys and I've ridden a ct110, KTM 450 motard and currently riding a vstrom 650. I mainly commute but I want a bike that will not limit where I can go, so in saying that I'm looking to upgrade and I've looked at the usual adventure kings! (BMW, KTM,triumph and both teneres.)
I've tested both Yamaha s and I really like the ST . can any one point out any things to look out for when buying a second hand?
Also what are people experiences with service cost and general matience?
I haven't test ridden the bmw or the KTM just cause I know I'll get a Hard on for the ktm and cause I commute I don't want to pay for the KTM $$$$ privilege or thee fact I don't drink laté enough to ride a bmw.

Look forward to some help!

I commute on the S10, I also pack in so big miles, in 52000km the only thing the bike (2010) has had is a new spoke. Service costs are well below what I was paying for past BMWs. Fuel consumption; mine has averaged 4.7l /100km owner the last 20000kms.
I use an independent guy for servicing now, he is marginally cheaper than deeds it not by a huge amount.
It's not S powerful as the latest bikes, nor as funky looking. But do you know what it's as good as any of the 7 previous BMWs cheaper to buy, cheaper to run and for what it's worth more comfortable.

thanks man!
I'm getting similar economy on my Strom.

Is there really that much power diff between new and the first 1200? I only ask cause I tested a k15 and I'm looking to buy a k10

It says there is bit more in the mags/specs and the later ones are a bit smoother, I changed the CCT which smoothed mine out. I have no complaints or will to change.

So just doing some reading and can someone point me to some helpful posts about changing the clutch thing on the early models?

There is not one single thread here with the step by step, but if you do a search for "clutch basket", we have quite a few threads discussing the benefits of making the change. I also recall a few of them had some installation tips (like keeping the bike on the side stand to avoid draining the oil when removing the cover, and that the gasket can usually be re-used).
