I've had the tank propped up before but I've never removed it. Must it be empty of fuel before removing? TIA

The service manual says you should remove the fuel with a pump (or siphon it out I suppose) . And surely the tank will be lighter without fuel.

Thanks, yeah definitely don't want the tank completely full, just for ease of handling. My main concern is fuel leaking out of the connections when disconnected, like the old gravity feed tanks would do.

Mine had a couple gallons in it when I removed it for the valve check/adj. Some residual fuel will come out of the supply hose to the throttle bodies but that's it so you should be okay.

I just make sure the amount of fuel remaining is pretty low and have removed the tank for easier access to what's underneath. I guess it is more prudent to siphon or pump the residual gas out first.

Thanks Joe, that's the information I needed. I recall your report about your bike stalling because it ran out of gas after you completed your adjustment so I was wondering if you'd emptied it first.

Yeah, it did have some, definitely not 2 gallons. But enough to swish around and none came out. I think the pump holds it in and keeps it from flowing like the non-pump ST1300 upper tank would..

The pump has a check valve. Nothing above the check valve will come out. A full tank can be lifted off.
