Fuel Tank Filler Tube Vent...

Hi
I have searched this forum for 'vent' and got everything with 'adventure' in, also tried various other words and can't find what I am looking for...

When I brim the tank on my S10 it extends the range nicely, and by 'brim' I mean right to the top, above the Yamaha recommended filler tube level, the problem with this is it takes ages to get the extra in due to the lack of venting, I am thinking I could drill a few holes in the side/top of the filler tube for better air release when filling it up.

I did find a thread on how to remove the filler tube completely but this is a bit drastic and would rather drill some holes, anyone had much experience doing this?

Thanks

PS @ Mods, please change the CSS so the text entered into the search box can be seen, black on grey isn't ideal ;D

Use a long punch and a hammer and punch three holes around the top of the neck of the filler tube. Works great especially when it is a hot day.

Thanks, I understand fuels expands on a hot day but what is the relevance of this for this mod?

That's what I did on my 12 but holding off on the 14, it seems to get better mileage by just a bit and the extra fuel in the 12 never seemed to amount to enough to make any real difference. I just get gas at 150 miles if I'm not familiar with the area. This post guarantees I'll be running out of gas on my next trip within 10 miles of a station lol.

I think Tomato has it a little basakwards. The reason the airgap is in there is for fuel expansion. On hot days, or when the engine is hot, it is not real smart to have a completely topped off tank just sitting idle, or you might have fuel pissing all over the ground beneath you. If you are traveling and want the most fuel you can get in at one time, it works great.

yea that makes sense.
I brimmed it whilst in France a few weeks ago and then had some food, came back to a puddle of petrol under the bike - a hot day.
So just a centre punch does the job does it?

Ok, a condensed version; a few ice pick punched holes around the top of the neck allows an easier top off. No metal chips in the tank from a drill bit. Takes some effort to get the hole started. A topped off parked bike will puke fuel on the ground. Use the top-off only when traveling right away, otherwise it's a waste of that .3-.4 of a gallon. I did the punch thing on my Royal Star, haven't done it yet on the Tenere.

Filling a hot tank causes the gasoline to expand and belch (air) as it gets full. The holes allows the air to escape and you can fill the tank fuller and faster. Every quarter gallon is another 10+ miles of travel.

I used a scratch all, and punched a few holes, but made a mistake and put a pin hole in the top of the tank. Be careful.

I had to remove the tank to fix the pin hole I made when I let the awl contact the inside top of the tank. With the tank off and drained, I decided to just cut the stupid thing out of the tank with a dremel tool and cut off wheel. Now the tank is just like every other bike I have ever owned, easy to fill, easy to look in and see how much fuel is in the tank. As noted above, don't completely fill the tank, unless you are going to be riding straight away.
