Does anyone know how deep in fuel the pump needs/wants to be to function properly? I'm assuming that it uses fuel to cool itself. The thing is that when I get to the flashing last bar on the fuel gauge, a fill-up is 4.5 gallons. I'm considering "recalibrating" the float arm to give myself a little more accuracy at the low end of the tank instead of the meter being super optimistic for 200 miles, then freaking out and telling me I'm gonna be pushing the beast if I don't fill up right away. Somebody must know the specs.

No specs. The fuel running through the pump body supplies enough 'cooling'. Reshaping the arm has been done with good success. And yes, I've done a bunch of Chevy fuel pumps over the years and the only thing we've been able to come up with is the owners are chronically running their tanks very low. Shouldn't work that way, the cooling, and it's only Chevy, the pool of 'bad' pumps is drying up, fewer and fewer every year, the Jury is still out.
