Fuel cells

I am experimenting with fuel cells for the Tenere. I am on my second version, a flatbed vs. My first which was a top fill racing cell.

Photos attached.

Racing cell is advertised at 5 gallons, but holds a bit over 4 if you really try.

Flatbed cell should be a touch over 5 gallons and sits a lot lower, I am removing the plastic mount for the rear seat and mounting the cell to tabs I welded to the Happy Trails pannier racks.

Hi Rustykfd

I did a similar thing - started with an off-the-shelf JAZ 5 gallon:

Now have the custom flatbed:

The flatbed sure helps with luggage carrying.

How are you approaching the filler placement and style?

OX34,
I have used a filler neck out the back of the cell in the past. I don't really want to give up any space on the top to an aircraft style filler.

Funny, I saw both of your cells in the forum, but didn't connect them to one guy.

Have you looked at how much lower you can move the cell if you pull the plastic deck off the back of the bike?

Does anyone know what the sensor is that is located under the plastic rear deck? I am thinking a tip-over sensor perhaps? How about the extra connector under the seat while I'm at it?

Yes the sensor is a lean-angle (tip-over) sensor. The connector is for testing the ABS.

This is off topic, but had a sweet fuel cell set up on my former ride. Much easier to plumb as the bike had carbs (not fuel injected). ;D

I'm not brave enough to start drilling into my gas tank. ??? I'll just stick with 3L gas cans clamped to the back of the panniers. Should keep me out of trouble.

Rusty, the aircraft filler was specifically so I could use the flat surface.

I have the Twisted Throttle Dry bag clipped with quick release buckles. A few seconds every 6 to 7 hours of highway riding is no too much of a hassle. A pelican or top case can bolt up there and leave the filler free.

Having said that, I have auxiliary tanks on both of my FJRs with filler necks stuck off the side so there is no need to move anything when filling ( again, every 6 to 7 hours of riding).

I looked at removing the plastic deck off the back but did not for 2 reasons.

1) the deck covers an irregular shape hole that would be very hard to waterproof when removed.
2) height gives a nice compromise between gravity feed requirements and low enough centre of gravity and leg swinging room.
