FRUSTRATING CRUISE CONTROL VARIABILITY

I know this is all over past threads. Please share with me a general approach my problem.
I have a 2017 ST1200. Automatic Cruise. 12K miles. Was working flawlessly until this summer. The symptom: RANDOM as hell flashing cruise light--sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When blinking it is dead. I know there are many triggers to disengaging it: clutch, rear brake, throttle reverse, front brake--and I have NOTICED no replicable method to trigger the cruise control demise to flashing yellow. Lately, it starts out working, and nearly every other trip, it just stops and starts blinking. Sometimes, when it does this--I pull over, turn off the bike, turn it back on, and it works perfectly the rest of my ride. Only to do it again and again.

This has been happening for months now. My mechanic when he put new tires on it--was told of this. He said he "made adjustments to throttle" and it seem to work a bit after this but I believe he was just seeing the randomness of it going on and off as I am seeing chronically. Hence, he doesn't know what to do. He is not a Yamaha dealer.

My question: what to do first? As this seems like an electrical issue--as I heard the brake switch is often a culprit. But any gurus out there appreciated as I don't want to just start replacing random stuff in a fishing for the problem exhibition.

Thanks!!!!! David.

As you seem to be aware, there are many microswitches that need to stay engaged because just opening for thousandths of a second can be enough to trip the cruise. These include:
Double switch for the clutch lever,
Front brake,
Rear brake,
Side stand,
The engage switch itself,
and probably one or two I'm not thinking of.

I'd just start shotgunning by replacing one at a time, starting with the front brake switch then the rear brake switch. fwiw - The rear switch is the one you may not realize you are actuating enough to break the contact because it doesn't take much.

I am having this same issue on a 2023 Super Tenere I just purchased. Brake light is on all the time and CC indicator flashes. I cleaned the brake levers with wd 40 and no resolve. Is this recall you refer to include the 2023 model?

Here's the link to put your VIN into and check for recalls.

Check for Recalls: Vehicle, Car Seat, Tire, Equipment | NHTSA

The list below shows the effected units. But mine is '17 and it was one of the effected one per the VIN, but not this list.

Yamaha Motor Corp., USA (Yamaha) is recalling around 18,203 2018-2020 MTT9GT (Tracer GT), 2019 MXTGTKL (NIKEN GT), 2017-2020 MT10, 2018-2020 XTZ12 (Super Ténéré), 2013-2020 FJR13, 2018 XV19B (Star Eluder), and 2018-2021 XV19 (Star Venture) motorcycles because the front brake switch can fail due to increased resistance from silicon oxide. Failure of the front brake switch can cause the brake light to stay on constantly and/or the cruise control system to shut off unexpectedly. Both situations increase the risk of a crash (NHTSA Recall Notice, No. 20V814, Report receipt date: December 28, 2020).

I'm assuming the updated front brake light switch as been addressed in both cases, and that's covered above.

Check the adjustment of the rear brake light switch. You'll need to remove the little heel plate on the right side and adjust the position of the brake light switch downward until the brake light switch goes off. Since this is a two function switch you may need to adjust it just a bit farther to make sure the cruise control cancel switch is also off. There's a narrow position where the brake light will work normally but the cruise cancel switch is still engaged. Don't adjust switch so far down that the brake light isn't working at all though. The brake light function can be tested in the garage but a road test will be required to confirm CC function.

Thanks. No recall for mine.

Never did the recall but I should.

The switch is adjustable. My CC works 90% of the time now that I adjusted it to match my rear lever adjustment.

Is this a new leftover 2023? If so, I'd just take it back to the dealer. Wonder if dealer setup involves handlebars or anything.
Otherwise, I think you need to isolate if the brake light is on all the time due to front or rear brake lever. Then go from there. I like Ventura Jeff's thoughts.
Pretty sure the recall didn't involve 2023 but I wouldn't swear to it.

It’s a used 2023 that I bought from a local dealer. Has 17,000 miles on it. I’m not very mechanically inclined and I have a great Yamaha mechanic in town so I am taking it to him to diagnose. Thanks for all the input. I’ll keep you all posted on what I find.

My ‘23 cruise control with 18000 miles on it started flashing and didn’t engage last week. And, similar to my ‘15 that had the brake light switch replaced per the recall, I could confirm it was the switch by turning off/on the ignition while rolling…..the cruise would work until I used the front brake lever a few times. Then, would not work.

I seemed to have solved the current problem by removing the switch (one screw), spraying contact cleaner in the switch/plunger, cleaning/greasing the brake lever pivot bolt, and reassembling. My cruise control has worked flawlessly for about 500 miles now.

BTW, a new switch and harness is around $120.00 if out of warranty like mine is.
