Took delivery of wife's (Bullett) bike Friday, now with 220 miles. We think we have the suspension reasonably well dialed in for her, with both forks set evenly. But, the front is noticeably, and annoyingly bouncy. Will try to get it back in to the dealer ASAP, but wondering what to tell them to look for. Yeah, me of little faith in dealers.

To me this feels like a front wheel issue.

We jacked it up and spun the front wheel. First finding is that the wheel drags considerably, and it will not spin freely, e.g. it drags to a halt within inches. Apparently on the brake pads. In contrast, on my bike, now with 9000+ miles, you can hear contact with the pads, and there is a bit of drag, but you can certainly spin the wheel a rotation or more. I assume this is normal for new pads. Brakes seem to have bedded and work normally.

Next findings are that the steering bearing seems properly adjusted with no play in the forks, or binding on lock to lock motion. As well, there are no noticeable issues with the tire being out of round or out of true, although it is a little hard to tell when you can't really spin it. No visible anomalies in the tire. Tire pressure confirmed at 33 psi.

Like most, or all, of these bikes, no balancing weights are present. At this point, with my limited mechanical knowledge I am assuming this is most likely a balancing issue, but I know next to nothing about forks and front suspension. Any other concerns I should have them rule out? Or just tell them it's out of sorts and leave it them?

TIA,

Jan

I guess the first question is, are the rotors colored other than shiny metal?
The next thing I would look for, are the rotors dragging on a caliper? As for the bouncing front end, have you adjusted the forks?

There could be something wrong with the forks, but you should have a good suspension tech do the work or check them out. jmho

Since the have to put the front wheel on at the dealer, they messed it up. Probably did not bounce the forks with axle pinch clamps loose to allow everything to find it's own 'neutral' position, so it's binding. That is a rookie mistake.

I explained to Twisties how to do this,, so unless he had a tech do it, it should have been done..

We just picked the bike up. Don't have the lowering links yet, so have not raised the forks yet. We have adjusted the preload, rebound and compression damping, but did not touch the wheel or forks. I do know how to center the suspension, (loosen, bounce tighten) so I will give that a shot. Didn't think of that. Actually, didn't know an out of alignment suspension would cause the bike to bounce like this.

Either that or you have a new tight Tenere. Like Dirt Dad did. I seem to remember him mentioning the forks being a bit "sticky".

Ok, just loosened the pinch bolts and axle, bounced it, re-torqued, and test rode. Like glass. Perfect.

Thanks guys! You went straight to the problem.

Oh, and the brakes seem fine. No discoloration on the rotors, at least that I can see by garage light. Certainly no performance issues or warping. Should be fine.

Yes, I have noticed that the suspension has softened on my Tenere (the one with 9000 + miles) and her's (the new one) is noticeably tighter. However, this was clearly something else. Thankfully a quick fix once I knew where to look!
