Front Fork curiousity

Hi folks. Just curious. Has anyone tried fitting any different front forks. It struck me with my recent crash that the original 'Yamaha' ones are really pricey. Would a pair from something like a Triumph Tiger or KTM adventure fit and do the same job...(using the proper Yamaha fork lowers where the axle goes in).

Didnt explain myself properly...sorry folks. What I should havve said is. In uk if you had to replace your front forks there is virtually no chance of finding yamaha ones on ebay so you would be forced to buy new which costs about £2,100 for both forks complete. BUT you often see used and good forks on ebay for a KTM or Triumph Tiger for example. Just curious if any of them would work? The KTM ones would probably be better forks too?

Forks are generally not bolt-on interchangeable between bikes, especially when you are going across mfgs. There's the basic fitment differences (spacing, diameter, offset, length, axle diameter/clamping, caliper attachment points, etc.), and there are the issues of travel, damping, spring rates, etc. Swaps are certainly done (most often when developing a custom bike of some sort), but usually there is custom development and machining of hard parts such as new triple trees, axles, spacers, etc. Occasionally a swap will be relatively easy and develop a following (putting CBR600 forks on VFRs comes immediately to mind), but I haven't heard of much interchange for the S10 and doing it just to have a wider selection of used parts would be unlikely to be cost effective. And I've never heard of being able to use the uppers of one fork with the lowers of another. There's a lot more to these things than just a couple of tubes that slide inside one another.

This is all just general hand-waving..... perhaps there is something out there which is a relatively easy swap although I doubt it.

Cheers Mark. Fair points. I was just think that there must be some manufacturers using the same 'top' or 'outer' tube. One could still use the fork lowers so there'd be no problem with axle/caliper hangers etc. Then the inner tubes/stancions are fairly reasonable (about £120 each new) but the upler bits are £500 each. Seems like alot to me for the upper tube. Anyway...just sharing silly thoughts with you all!

Look around for specialist repair outfits, you may be able to get the original uppers fixed depending on how badly damaged they are.

You may also get lucky with a breaker, it is common for the Stanchions to bend, but the rest to be in tact so you may find those parts are available, but just not advertised on Ebay as most people are looking for the whole set as a simple swap.

Look up frame straighteners to start with, you could also talk to suspension specilists who may be able to help or point you the right way (try Hagon / MCT)
