Quite a difference these two bikes. The Honda just eats up miles, but it's short stiff suspension is unkind to the behind on these rough roads. I also drove a Wee-strom for a year which I loved but wanted a bit more room for two up and low maintenance shaft drive. I'm going to miss the low stand over height of the ST, and the quiet cockpit at speed, but not the bottoming out on potholes and the leaned forward riding position.

Hi Disaster. Welcome to our community. I had an ST1300 a few years back as did a good number of others on here, you'll know Mellow I'm sure. As you say completely different bikes, both very good, but very different.

Greetings from Texas! Just last night I got my first taste of a ST1300. Really, my first taste of a sport touring bike. As compared to the Tenere, the ergonomics are HUGELY different. The ST1300 was the motorcycle equivelant of a clown car (narrower bars/no leg room). But the smooth power was addicting. And plenty of power. I put about 100 miles on the ST1300 and had a grin on my face the whole time. I wouldn't trade my Tenere for it, but I can certainly understand why someone would love that bike.

You'll get over it.
Fast.

Seriously, there are a bunch of us here who came from the ST13, FJR, C14, and other sport tourers. Some have kept one of each.

Welcome aboard.

Welcome on, Disaster (I hope not ;D ) from the U. S. Yep, sold my ST1300 last fall. Didn't ride it anymore. Don't miss it.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the bike. The S10 makes a great sport touring bike with the added bonus of going down roads that you would have avoided on the ST1300.

Welcome. I traded my ST1300 for the Tenere. There are certain things about the ST1300 I do miss, mostly better fuel economy, and far better range on a single tank. The Tenere does everything the ST1300 could do well, and much of it nearly as well. Then there is that whole, not pavement part of earth, that the Tenere does pretty well, that the ST1300 really didn't like.

Like me. I have both and love it.
But I get better mileage on the Tenere than the ST1300, but still better range on the ST1300.

Welcome from metro Seattle Disaster!

Congrats on the Tenere, you won't be disappointed with the machine. I'm one of those who kept both...both of my bikes compliment the other quite nicely!

Better fuel economy for the ST1300? That hasn't been my experience so far (two tanks through the S10.)

On Fuelly, the most common fuel mileage for the ST is 37mpg though the average looks closer to 43mpg. The S10's most common is 45mpg while the average looks slightly lower...maybe 44mpg. There is one outlier getting 57mpg for the ST1300, and one getting 53mpg with the S10.

I used to get about 43mpg with the ST if I didn't get on it too hard, I hit as low as 36mpg on a trip with speeds in the triple figures. My first couple tanks on the S10 have been closer to 45mpg though they only included short bursts in 3 figures.

The biggest difference I've noticed is the S10 tachs lower on the highway. I always wished the ST had another gear...not for power, but for fuel economy. It has so much torque that I'd find myself cruising around 35-40mph in 5th gear.

Funny, the wide bars feel a bit awkward to me, on the S10. The legroom is tighter, but not bad for my 6 foot frame and it was really nice to be able to sit on the bike, with bent knees and still be flatfooting. I had installed a Hemi high rise on the ST which got the bars back about 2 inches (by moving them back and cocking them inward slightly.) I'd highly recommend the Hemi. It got my weight off my hands, though I still drove straight armed on the ST.

On the S10, with ROX 2" risers set for more backward than upward, I'm able to drive with bent elbows. This is closer to how my V-strom was set up using setback risers on it, too. I prefer this more relaxed position for all day driving.

The really miss the quiet cockpit of the ST though. With a Laminar Lip installed I could ride in a pretty quiet pocket of air and make phone calls at 100mph. I get a lot of buffetting with the S10, but not as much as with the V-strom. I've ordered a Parabellum windscreen for the S10. I'm hoping that gets me closer.

Like you, I am 6 foot. I run the Parabellum 22 inch screen along with the OEM winglets (a must). I find the ride very quiet. When my J&M system was working properly (I am working through issues), I could make calls at speed and those on the other end were shocked to learn I was on the bike.

For about 50k miles, my ST1300 usually returned mpg's in the high 40's to low 50's. I could often get 300 miles before reserve on this bike. My Tenere usually returns numbers in the high 30's to low 40's. 160-180 miles before reserve is pretty normal. The Tenere fuel economy really seems to plummet at high speeds, 80 mph plus expressway trips. My ST1300 would often return 50+ mpg at these speeds.

The Tenere is an aerodynamic brick and hits the lower mpg numbers at speed, or with lots of stop and go.

However,

My bike is downstairs and shows just under 51 mpg right now and I don't consider it a fluke. The actual mpg is a bit less, but the difference is that my commute is 37 miles each way, fairly flat, only 12 traffic lights, and a good portion of the time the speed limit is 45-50 (me doing 50-55-ish because that's what traffic is doing). This is only slightly off from the 2 FJRs that preceded the Tenere. I also get really good mileage out of my tires for the same reason.

I noticed that today on my second long trip with the S10. When cruising 40-60mph, the S10 gets much better gas mileage than the ST1300. However, when turning 85+mph the mileage really plummets. The ST1300 isn't only more aerodynamic, it sits lower and punches a smaller hole in the air.

800 mile trip today. A lot of freeway speeds + (ie. 80-105mph.) Climbing over 70mph you can really see the mileage plummet on the S10 vs. the ST1300. The ST1300 was definitely more aerodynamic and sat lower to boot. I think it took 4.7 gallons at 180 miles today (38mpg.) Seems to indicate much lower gas mileage at high speeds than it actually gets though (indicates 25-32mpg in the high 80's...did much better.) Also seems to indicate much higher gas mileage than it really gets at low speeds (indicates 48-60mpg at 40mph...got closer to 44mpg.)

::026:: on that!

I miss my ST1300, great on those LD trips and I did find it more comfy. Too bad a Land Rover killed it and nearly me. I've got the setup on my Tenere pretty well set for comfort but I do not get as good MPG compared to the Honda. Just cannot do 55-60 MPH when I have to ride the slab. Besides obvious design differences already noted, must be a wrist thing...

I find the S10 much more comfortable than my old ST1300. I prefer the upright riding position, the softer suspension, and it runs much cooler. Would get crazy heat from the tank of the ST and a real bad heat bleed from the right side muffler that burnt my ankle one time. The only negative of the S10, other than the shorter range was the windscreen. This one came with a MadStad adjustable windscreen and it took a while to find a decent position but at it's best it isn't as good as the screen on the ST, with a Laminar Lip. I got way more noise at highway speeds and lots of cold air slipping in. Got back this weekend to a Parabellum windscreen. Will try that first with MadStad bracket but might remove the bracket altogether.

Just did 1400 mile trip this weekend. The gas mileage at triple figures was all of 27 mpg. I think the lowest I saw on the ST was about 32 mpg, when driving similarly fast. The ST got scary unstable over 110-115 or so. The S10 is much more stable at speed.
