fork spring replacement

Im getting ready to swap fork springs (and sending my shock off to Rick at Cogent Dynamics for a service/rebuild/re-spring). Question: Do I need to remove the damper rod to pull the springs? How involved is that process? I have the service manual and it goes into detail about removing the rod and the spring, but this is covered in the section of disassembling the fork. I'm just wanting to swap springs and fluid.

I can't tell you about the springs, but Rick at Cogent has always done well by me. He is building the suspension on a DR 650 for me now. He just finished a full upgrade for my Tenere, and it is just awesome.
