2014 Super Tenere ES now has 400 miles, purchased 10/25/14. For point of reference my current ride is a 2011 BMW R1200RT (30K miles), previous rides, 2008 Gold Wing, 2008 FJR.

Several months ago I got the itch for a new bike. I have really enjoyed my RT with no problems except rear shock replacement at 600 miles (weeping seal, fixed under warranty). The RT is really a great riding motorcycle but as many know the service is costly and I'm thinking with 30K miles something expensive is bound to break since I'm out of warranty now. Was going the get the FJR, new '15 graphite color but decided that the most important features had to be comfort, reliability, touring, reasonable dealer service availability and cost, which lead me to the S10.. Never could get really comfortable on the '08 FJR which I sold after one year and 10K miles.

Knowing of my upcoming business trip from Maryland to North Carolina (think Blue Ridge Parkway) I wanted to get the bike before I left so I could take it with me, and not put extra miles on the RT.

Departed Saturday morning from Maryland on my RT en route to North Carolina, via the Yamaha dealer in Northern Virginia. Dealer had a '14 ST on the floor. After a short amount of time worked out the following deal: bike $11,949, yamaha black side cases installed $1049, freight $357, prep $329, doc $149, plus tax and tags. To my surprise rather than driving off on the showroom bike, dealer said mine was in a crate and would take about 1 hour to assemble (he told me before our deal). I do want to say my dealer was very friendly and easy to deal with.

Dealer agreed to keep my RT until I returned on Wednesday from my trip. I'm planning on leaving the ST for the 600 mile service, drive my RT home and pick up the ST again in a few days. So after 3 hours the ST was ready to go. Now for the kick myself in the butt issue, while waiting around for 3 hours, looking at the same bikes over and over, I never asked for the owners manual to get familiar with the bike, especially the break in section. I've read that it's best not to baby the bikes during break in, to get some rpms going and vary the speed. So I rode to Staunton VA, about 120 miles, between 3 - 5 K rpms, lots of time in 5th at 65 - 70. So when I arrived at my hotel and read the manual "There is never a more important period in the life of your engine than the period between 0 and 1000 mi...avoid prolonged operation above 3900 rpm" ??? :'( QUESTION ONE: I'm hoping you experienced guys will assure me I've not done any damage.

So next morning I'm checking the oil in the sight glass and to my dismay it's all oil, oh no, my oil is overfilled. I did check it just before leaving the dealer and it was all oil but I wrote it off because the bike was not complete level and I was ready to roll out after a long day at the dealer. So my Blue Ridge Parkway ride is overshadowed by my concern that I may be damaging my new bike with to much oil (yes, I worry alot). I departed the BRP early, at Roanoke VA to find someone to let out some oil or just replace it. Well since it's Sunday, no one available. QUESTION TWO: What's the likely hood I'm doing any damage riding with oil overfill? I'm due back to the dealer tomorrow after another 250 miles, 625 total.

Despite this rough start I'm liking the bike. It's so different from my RT but I know it's going to grow on me. The ride is high but I am very comfortable even at very low parking lot speeds, I don't think it carries it's weight high as I had read. The engine is very smooth. I'm surprised by the shift schedule, 2nd @ 12 mph, 3rd @ 19 mph, 4th @ 25mph, 5th @ 31mph, 6th @ 37 mph, I thought the engine would rev higher but it seems to handle the low RPM's well. Actually on the first day I was reving it rather high and I really didn't like the sound of it, so I'm good with lower rpms. Haven't tried Sport mode yet. Also haven't really had time to play with the ES but since my RT has it I knew it was something I wanted.

As most stock seats this one is very uncomfortable, fortunately I brought my airhawk. Will be ordering my Sargent soon! Coming from larger windscreens I always thought the ADV bikes had no wind protection with the small screens but it's really not bad, however I may check into a larger screen.

I'll post more later. Thanks for all the information I've learned on this forum.

I took it easy for 100 miles. Than I stood on it. Dont worry about the bike, give it hell and enjoy. As for future oil changes (if they are done by you or dealer), 3.4 qts is the starting point for an oil change. It is likely that the dealer "topped" it off after it came out of the crate and then it ended up high once the reservoir pumped up. Like I said, ::021:: and that is the beauty about this bike.

Sounds like a good deal on a great bike! Enjoy it! If you need more weather protection ck out the Yamaha windwings, madstad bracket & a parabellum shield. Works great when the temps drop ::022::

Pinscher, can I ask your riding weight?

I have demo ridden the ES a few times and really liked it. My main concern would be too much traveling weight for the rear suspension.

I am 220, trax hard boxes...Trax top box...too much stuff in them...suspension on the ES worked...perfectly! Maybe if you had two people on this bike who were heavy...plus luggage...and then some...it might be an issue. Then all one would have to do is change the rear spring.
