Finally no buffeting!

I purchased my 2015 S10 ES about a month ago. Overall very pleased with this bike with on exception, the buffeting. I tried moving the windscreen up/down and even took it off for a bit, tried the winglets which made the slightest difference, even moved the seat up and down. I'm about 5'10" and the wind seemed to be hitting me smack on the top of my helmet. The roar in my helmet was LOUD and a ride on the freeway wasn't too pleasant with all the head bobbing.

I was close to purchasing a larger screen, had already settled on the National Cycles windshield, until I came across a thread about a windshield spoiler from eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/141946381434?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT . I figured for the $36 it was worth a try, if it didn't work I would just go with the bigger windshield. The spoiler arrived in about 2 weeks and went on pretty easy.

First impressions: NO BUFFETING, no wind blast, head bobbing gone, roar on the helmet gone! Got up to highway speeds without any issues and the wind blast from traffic also seemed reduced. The whole riding experience was much more enjoyable with the spoiler. I'm so glad I spent the $36 on the spoiler vs the $150 ish on a new windscreen. There are two SMALL nitpicks to this screen so far. 1) the mounts have a couple of 3D printed parts, not really a big issue and for the price I'm not complaining. 2) The spoiler works so well my helmet heated up fairly quick with the 93F temp today.

Hope this helps someone in the same position I was in!

That seems a good buy stxhunter. One question - I am the same height as you, are you looking through or over the spoiler when you are achieving no wind blast/buffeting ?

Cool beans! I always wondered how well these worked on the XTZ. Do you have to drill holes to mount this one or does it just clamp on the top edge (can't really tell from the picture)? Does it make your windscreen and mounts shake more or less at speed?

Groundhog - I'm looking over the spoiler with the seat in the high position, even with the spoiler in it's highest position.

hoak - the spoiler clamps on to the stop windshield. There is a little vibration on hard bumps, but it seems to be due more the to the way the yamaha windshield bracket is made. The bracket is somewhat flexible so the extra weight on top doesn't help anything.

I bought the same windscreen off of Ebay. $36 with free shipping from Russia. Clamps on with no drilling. I replaced my CalSci tall windshield with it which was good for road riding but couldn't be lowered for slower dirt riding. I now have the stock short windscreen and the clamp on adjusted to the highest setting. Its actually as good as the taller one piece shield. And now I have the option of lowering it.

I just received mine yesterday and have not mounted it yet but it looks decent. How tight did you guys crank down those clamps on your stock screen?

Thanks for the info. I'm 5'10" and have the same problem. Wind hits the top of my helmet and buffeting is a problem over 60. I ordered one and think it'll smooth the airflow over my helmet.

I cranked down enough to bend the arm on the spoiler. ::025:: It still works though.

I see there's two versions of this thing, both from Russia: one has dimensions 350х126 and is labeled "Universal" the other has dimensions 270х140 and is labled "Yamaha TX1200 Super Ténéré", the latter looks smaller but is shown on a pre 2013 Super Ténéré... Which did you guys get?

I ordered just the brackets from the guy. I'm going to make up a couple different sizes when they get here. Even with my hacked together givi airflow, the wind roar is still more than I'd like. I'm also testing different ear plugs. I have smooth air, it's just crazy loud.

Well I took some measurements, and assumed that stxhunter did order the 350х126 Universal version; and as we're the same height on same model year bike I don't think I'll be disappointed for $44, and if it's only so-so $44 more for the flatter narrower and taller XTZ model isn't too steep either.

I have one fitted to my standard 2014 screen , I'm 5'9: and 30" inside leg...It seems well made, and I think the set up is now the best I will get... Recommended!

On long motorway rides I use the Yamaha tall windscreen (on my 2013 S10). This did not have much effect. I recently installed the Madstad spoiler that clips onto the windscreen, tilted at an angle more vertical that the windscreen. My line of sight is above the spoiler (not through it). The noise has been very substantially reduced.

I went with the universal one. I took a few pics, not the best but hope it helps. The screen is roughly in the middle position. When I had it all the way up there wasn't enough air flow to my helmet!

I changed from my fancy pants ear plugs back to some plain foam ones from cvs, and all is right with the world again. I might still swap shields back and forth, but the roar has been reduced to a rumble. I can deal with that.

Thanks stxhunger for posting; your pictures made me glad I went the Universal directions as well! Some more curiosity questions though: can you set the bolt tension so you can adjust this thing without needing an Allen wrench with you, or do you pretty much need to torque things down? Also the screen grippers look pretty small do they hold pretty firm; ergo would it be pretty easy for someone to yank the thing off and steal it? On that same track does it look like they're gonna leave permanent thumb prints on your screen? Thanks again for posting!

Hoak , this his is the link to my original thread... it states Super Tenre, the picture looks like a Gen1 , mine is a Gen 2 and it fits fine so I'd say the universal or the S10 model will do the job just fine... As far as the fittings are concerned, there is enough tension in them to keep them where you set them , but if you need to adjust them you can use your hands, no need to get out the allen keys... I did around 150 miles on Sunday and the spoiler stayed where I'd set it...that was up to around 90mph in places ::26::

Not sure if long term the actual clamps will leave a mark or not, but when I first got it , I bolted it down tight and went for a ride, and decided to move it slightly as I had not centred it. There were no marks on the screen when I loosened and moved it. If it does leave some marks I'm not concerned as it will be a small price to pay. .... the spoiler also feels really secure when it is mounted, not much chance of it being stolen without tools 8)
