Final Drive Seal Question

Looks like the seal where the wheel hub meets the final drive is leaking. I have the seal and o-ring on order. Can anyone tell me if they have changed this seal and what to look for. Seems like you just un-bolt the flat cover back there and press a new seal into the cover. Does anything fly out when you do this? Should I do it on my work bench, or just do it on the bike?

Inquiring minds want to know !!!

Thanks.

Merged Mark's new thread with Greg's old one because Greg gave pictorial and excellent how-to.

Mine has leaked from time to time. Mostly after a good thrashing in the dirt and rocks. I've used a Seal Saver to clean around the inner part of the seal. Pretty much takes care of the problem. However i have done it several times and it disappears for a while and then returns after a good day of punishment! Have thought about having it replaced and wondered if you could do more damage than good?

I thought about using a seal saver, but I suspect that the seals are not installed with grease inside the seal lips, leading to premature wear. I am a big believer in greasing up seals when first installing them. The write-up that my thread was joined with does not really cover the seal I am going to replace, so I will just dive in and see what happens. It should be very straight forward. The seal was only $11, so I am going to just give it a go.

Sounded like the seal you were addressing, but search and you will find the other seal is also the subject of multiple prior threads.
