Okay, total new guy here so I apologize if this is stupid. I'm looking at a used 2102 and want to know when the final drive oil change is first due. Is it at 600 miles or 6000 miles?
Thanks a bunch. I'll introduce myself in the proper place when I have the bike!

I changed mine the first time at 600. There were a few minor shavings, so I changed it again at the next oil change. it looked fine then. Won't change it again for another 14k or so.

welcome.

'there's isn't such a thing as a stupid question, only stupid people' Mr. Garrison ::014::

No but seriously.

It will not hurt to change it when you get the bike, it takes five minutes, and is dead easy. I think the oil needs to go every 20xxxkm or so.
could be wrong.

Welcome on, UncaBud. Do you have the bike? Better getter. You'll love it. I changed mine at about 50 miles, engine oil too. The gear oil was ugly. It's cheap and easy so do it soon, I figure. Can't hurt a thing. Welcome aboard. When you get the chance, please post under Member Intros, so the rest of the crew can spot you and welcome you. ::004:: to the Forum. R. ::022::

I've given up on tracking the interval, I just change it every other oil change. With the capacity at only 1/4 quart, it costs ~$2.50 to change it.

Not to hy-jack this thread but I can't seem within reason to totally get mine to run out the fill hole. It is like it seems full because I think it is starting to run out then I check it after a 1000 mile trip and it needs topped off. Weird it isn't leaking and it isn't coming out the vent on the top just strange, I have been changing and checking shaft drive motorcycles since my 1st Gold Wing in 1977 and I have never had one act like this.

Doug44, have you tried turning the rear wheel a quarter or half turn in either direction? I watched the tech do this at the 600 mile service, and he added additional fluid after turning the rear wheel.

When I did the drive change, I put in Castrol Syntrax 75-90. It comes in a squirt bottle and I just squirted until it started running out.
Is that wrong? Should I have measure precisely 200 ml?

I think that is what do, but if you watch it closely, you can get it right up to the lip so that you don't have to clean things up. ::008::

The service manual procedure is to add 200ml, then check level. The checking procedure is level with the bottom of the fill hole, so I don't think there is any need to measure. The fill spec is FYI and redundant.

With most splash lubrication systems like this, level isn't critical - as long as there is a reasonable amount of fluid in there, it will be fine. I never check the level between changes..... if it is not leaking, then there is really no reason for the fluid to not be to spec - it has no place else to go.

My bike was delivered with 149 miles on the clock, I did another 5 to ride it around the block and warm the oil up, then changed both engine and shaft oil - 20 minutes work and about £30 including a filter.

I would always change a new bikes oil ASAP, just riding it home is enough to get 95% of any crap washed out of the motor, I then fill with a fairly low grade oil to help the bed-in process and let the dealer go about his business at 600 miles.

Will do Final Drive oil with rear tyre changes, only takes 5 minutes and can't do any harm, there is such a small amount of oil in there the cost is insignificant compared to what a tyre costs.

Yes sure did in both directions and as best I can tell it appears that the oil is at the top of the ring gear so you can't do much better than this but then if you try it will take more oil sort of like a sponge hawr. Not too worry I guess like I said to the OP. ::021::

My first one was done at about 1k Kms. The oil was filthy and looked grey and metallic. Nothing sticking on the magnet though. Filled it up and went for a short ride. Dumped and filled again. Drove 200kms. Dumped and filled and now nice and clean. Should be good for 10 or 20k Kms.

Just done mine again at 6k, I did it when I got the bike with a mere 149 miles on it, I think the oil was cleaner this time as I remember it being pretty yucky last time.

It may have been done on the first official service at 600 miles, I am not sure as it was a free service and I only got a stamp in the book and I forgot to ask what they had done, then again I am never convinced what the dealer tells you is right.....

... as on the 6k service according to the sheet they checked, adjusted and lubed the drive chain ::) and the front and rear pads were "tick" percent worn. On my air cooled GS the BMW dealer always checked the coolant ;)

Anyway, this time the oil had to have done at least 5400 miles and it looked pretty decent, not sure if I trust the dealer to do it at 12k, but the warranty may expire before I hit this mark in which case I will either do it myself, or get my local independent to do it as they are about 40% cheaper and will do what I ask - just the coffee is crap and showroom lacks the million pound polish of the Yamaha (huge Multi-franchise) store.
