Ferry crossing and.......

Hi everyone, still getting used to my S10 all going well so far ::008::

Taking Big Blue on her first long ride tomorrow, which involves a 1.5 hour ferry crossing. I regularly use ferry crossings, be it 30 minutes or 2hr 30mins, on my WR250R or ex R1150S. I noticed a couple of recent short crossings that the S10 was visibly swaying with the waves/boat movements. This never happened on my GS and I didn't notice other bikes swaying like mine. Also, the S10 sits upright compared to the GS. Tomorrows crossing involves me leaving the bike below deck unattended for the duration of the journey. Needless to say I'm slightly worried as I don't want to return to a bike on its side. I'm probably overthinking things but I just need some reassurance ^-^

Note that bikes have to be left on the side stand. I always leave it in gear and the suspension is not soft.

My other question is regarding the accessory socket...it's not working, any ideas what I need to look at? (I haven't had a chance to check the fuse)

It's likely the fuse being low amp & easy to blow it out. Are there some hooks on the ships floor to tie down the bike? Put something on the seat to run the tie downs or rope over so it won't damage it.

I'll take some fuses with me and take a look while waiting for the boat to set off. Are they micro blade or regular?

Yes there are anchoring points and straps, however I have never needed to tie down my GS (nor have I seen other bikes strapped) including a 15 hour crossing from Greece to Italy over high seas. Is the S10 known for tipping over on such crossings?

Wow, 15 hr crossing with no tie downs. The last long one I was on was an 8 hr. trip from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland and they had 4 point straps on every bike on the car deck.

It was the return leg from Ancona to Igoumenitsa and the sea was rather choppy! None of the many bikes on board were tied down there or back and all arrived safely upright. This was with Superfast Ferries. I felt the bike was in safe hands knowing that the Greeks have a lengthy history in shipping.

So I guess I'll be strapping her down today then!

Too right, take a lightweight ratchet strap to tie her down & make sure you aren't put too close to any other insecure bikes. It's amazing what bikes will take, but why risk it & ruin a trip/vacation?

You have more faith than I with Ferry operators. I have seen some ridiculous vehicle management in my time, so just take control of the situation. If it doesn't feel right, then it probably isn't. Leaving port with bow visors open, detergent swabbing leaving decks like ice rinks, insecure vehicles, lorries running up long before docking, smoking on car decks (officers, crew & passengers), short crossings in Greece with drivers parked so close they cannot open a door to escape, bikes leant against one another sometimes crudely roped to side rails. The list is endless. Don't put your life in the hands of the careless - don't assume competence. These guys will all hide behind force majeure or some disclaimer or other when it suits.

i'll echo the same as other.

had 07 DL for 5 years. great bike, tough as nails. Finally decided to change. Was between another Strom, the Africe Twin and the S10.

got a 16' ES.

totally different machine.
* stock windshield + laminar lip = ALL buffeting gone
* amazing pickup power even in T mode
* way better fuel range
* cruise control is amazing. you dont know you want it until you have real cruise (not a cheap throttle lock)
* i find the bike much more maneuverable
* abs brakes are great
* engine sound is amazing(!!)

Nico, I think you posted your response wrong thread...

Fuses are micro blade.

I would be tying my bike down anytime it's on another moving vehicle.
