This is my current favorite pic from a ride to Utah last April. The ride home through Nevada saw the temperature drop to 28, with a 40 mph wind and snow. I stopped in the town of Austen to help my wife thaw out and warm up. She loved Utah, not so fond of Nevada!

That area is so devoid of civilization, I believe you are right about cool mines to explorer. But I would rather ride there next time when it is just a bit warmer! How often do you hang out exploring sliver mines?
