Hey guys and gals whats up? I searched the threads about toll transponders and mounting them and I came across a thread on it. As its been out of use for a while I did not want to commit "threadomancy". So I started this one.

I was curious, having picked up an EZ Pass for the Super Tenere, as to where people have been mounting any toll transponders they may have. I know the windscreen is where they say it should go but I am worried with the curved shape. If anyone has an pictures of where they mount it or have had success with any of those mounts that are out there the information would be great. So yea.. take it easy.

I simply put mine in the map window on my tank bag. Haven't received any citations so it must be working.

Here is where I have mine stuck . . .

left side, inside the cowel. Keeps it out of sight and fairly well protected from the elements and sticky fingers and I have never had any issues with it functioning in this location on the ST or on my VFR where I had it mounted the same way.

::026:: Never any issues. On my Vstrom I had it on the windshield until one day I hit a huge bump/pothole on the interstate and it popped off and I could not catch it. Since getting a new one its always in the map pouch.....

If you don't live in an EZ-Pass state, but you want one to save you from the mortal danger at the tolls in other states, what is the best state to get it from?

Last year I ordered one from NY. I chose NY because I hit the NY Thruway about as often as I hit any toll road, and they said they'd give a 50% discount to motorcycles if I had theirs. Well, this turned out to be a lousy idea. To get the discount you have to send them a copy of your vehicle registration to prove it is a motorcycle, and I never got that done. Then when I took a trip through the northeast and used the device every day for a week, it didn't even work. At the tolls with no gates, I just got the "Call EZ-Pass" light every time - fortunately they worked it off my license plate and didn't fine me. If there was a gate, I had to to stop, take it out, wave it around in hopes it would be seen, and finally hand it to a human who would type things into the computer to open the gate, while cars piled up behind. Worse than fishing for change. And they were charging me a fee every month to keep the device in my possession. So I sent it back to them.

Now I need to order another.

I like that spot where JHKolb has his. Assuming I can get one that works.

I carry mine in my jacket's breast pocket, which works great.

Maryland charges $18/year to simply have the damned thing, PLUS the tolls.
By comparison, PA charges only $3.

I have one through NJ EZpass. I think it is $1/month . Oh, you want a statement? Add another $1.

I have tried mine in all sorts of methods on the bike. I had it in my man-boob pocket last night and it didn't register. I had to take it out and wave it like I just didn't care.

I bought a toll pass holder from Twisted Throttle. I haven't used it yet since it's still winter where I live. But, I plan on using it on my trip to Montana this summer. It mounts directly on the handlebars. I thought it was a little pricy for what it was($20.00), but I had a discount coupon and ordered a bunch of things, so it ended up being cheaper. Only time will tell whether it works or not. It's fairly small, so I'll stow it when not in use and use it when I'm on a toll road.

I did some more digging and Massachusetts has no monthly fee. When you try to apply online, they ask you your state. When I answered Michigan it automatically rerouted me to the Ohio EZ-Pass. I went back and told their site that it I lived in Massachusetts, and it let me into an application that could be filled out with my Michigan address and Michigan license plates. And it let me register three bikes and one car on the same account. I'll wait and see if my non-resident status or my mixture of vehicles makes them reject my app in a subsequent step. I doubt I'll be hitting any tolls for at least another month, so there's time yet to try something else if Massachusetts won't go for it.

i was told today that the ez-pass will work when kept under the seat. the plastic is thin enough to work quite easily.

also when i would keep my ez-pass in the truck glove compartment and it would trigger the toll (i had a low balance and was trying to not use it at that time).

That is an clever idea. I may have to try that myself.

The snap velcro thing that is attached to the EZ Pass... is it sturdy enough? It seems sturdy enough but at the same time it also seems kinda sketchy.

If I had a tank bag id try that idea but I as of yet do not.

Also youd think they have a smaller more bike friendly transponder. I swear this thing feels bigger then what a friend of mine has for his car.

Good luck. I have had mine in the glovebox of my truck WORK and just about anywhere but waving it in the air on the bike FAILS.

Here in Japan, the companies who contol the expressways and the credit card companies are slurping each other heavily. You can't have an 'Electronic Toll Collection' card to put in the transponder unit unless it's tied to a Japanese credit card...what a racket that is! I have my unit on a RAM mount right now...it's a fully waterproof, vibe resistant motorcycle specific model.
