Down Shift Issues

For about the last 1k miles I have been having down shift issues when the bike is hot. It wont down shift more than a gear, then you have to go a ways play with the throttle and eventually it will down shift to the next gear and repeat. It feels like it is in first whether it is in 4th or 2nd when it does this. Any ideas?

Thanks
Ed

Not sure I understand the post so let's break it down.

Any bike downshifts one gear at a time.

Are you standing still trying to get from a high gear to first or second. Most bikes have an issue downshifting at a standstill when hot. Try to avoid this or use your clutch to help synchronize the gears while shifting down.

Try using a thicker oil?

I hope I'm on the right track with your post, if not please clarify.

Have you removed the shifter pivot bolt and greased it? Many of us had similar problems and found that bolt to be almost galded when removed. I good cleaning and then greasing before replacing it helps a lot.

Clean and lube the shifter pivot. What is happening is the shifter is not returning to center. The ratchet mechanism (grossly over simplified) on the end of the shift drum cannot rotate far enough back to pick up the next pin. The sticky shifter causes this.

To confirm, lift the shifter just a little with your toe then try the down shift. Or just clean and lube the shifter pivot and be done with it.

It's a simple as giving the shifter pivot a healthy dose of WD 40. I do this whenever I think about it and it shifts like butter!

I found this to be true when searching for the problem but... I find that the spray does not last as long as the recommended lube. The spray works very well if you have been riding dirty roads. Especially roads prepped for ice and snow.

True, I'm of the notion that grease will pickup particulates and essentially creates a grinding compound. A quick spray clean and leaves a light lubricating film. Either way the point is to keep it cleaned and lubed.

Take the time to remove, clean, lube and re-install the shifter. You will be to go for many miles.

A spray of something like WD-40 is a temporary fix but will make shifting easier.

Mine has always down shifted hard. I did find the pivot point dry as many have, lubed with some never seize it was better but still this is the worst down shifting japanese tranny I have come across. Alot of times I find myself stomping on the shifter to down shift. I have learned to live with this, no false neutrals yet. I will just keep stompin, the tranny seems plenty sturdy.
