DIY Maintenance???

Hey everyone, so I'm looking to pick up a Tenere in the near future and I was wondering how easy is it to do maintenance myself? I have a better than average understanding of engines and tools, but what kind of things can I do on my own with little to no issues? Oil changes should be fairly straight forward but what about the scheduled maintenance? I am hoping to not have to use a dealer for most of it. I'm definitely a DIY kind of guy. Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

it's a very easy bike to work on, oil+ filter 30 minutes, i donr my rear brake pads last week, i was amazed, caliper off cleaned, new pads in and all back together in less than 10 minutes. 14k on the clock and she just gets better and better ::008::

Routine stuff is fairly easy. Valve checks/adjustments are tedious (as most water-cooled shim-adjusted bikes are), but the service interval is 26K. Also there is no computer to reset, special ABS bleeding devices, etc.

Well that is a relief, current ride is a Harley sportster. So called "scheduled maintenance" is every 2500 miles. I tend to take care of the small stuff on it but its a pain to work on.

I agree, it's pretty easy. Nothing like working on a bike with a center stand and high ground clearance. Now if I could just find my reading glasses.

I have the mx schedule in either an Excel or Numbers spreadsheet and have been sharing copies.
Send me an email to checksbob at hotmail dot com.

Clarification: Valve adj intervals are 26K, but basic service intervals (typically an oil change and some inspections) are 4K. (Euro bikes are 6K for some reason.) And a bunch of stuff like spark plugs, air filters, etc. are in-between.

The S10 maintenance is more/less like most Japanese bikes.

If you're sensitive to maintenance hassles, look at the new Triumph Explorer. I think they've decided to risk 10K basic intervals, but probably require synthetic oil.

4K Miles = 6K Kilometers (close enough)

Sorry, I wasn't clear.... the 4K US and 6K Euro oil change intervals I posted are all in miles (e.g., 6K is six-thousand miles). The Euro interval is NOT 6K kilometers, it is 10K kilometers or about 6K miles.

Euro intervals are different than US intervals for some reason. It's been discussed in other threads.

Yep that is true...had to go look at the Euro manual .... 10K kilometers (6000 mile service interval - I remembered that there was a 6000 in there somewhere!) vs 4000 miles for the US.

Wonder why the difference...certainly no difference in the motor (except some ECU programming)...
