Have any of you ever experienced the display/meter top case seeming to melt or deteriorate? I really don't know how else to describe it. Bought new in May, seems to have happened over the last 3-4 weeks. Any thoughts on whether or not this would be covered under warranty? New part is around $215.

It's actually a surprisingly common problem that windscreens can act like a magnifying glass, concentrating the sun onto a spot on the dash which overheats. I've seen it mentioned with a lot of different bikes. Don't know if it is strictly an aftermarket screen issues or whether the right angles/conditions could cause it to happen with the stock screen.

I've had a Parabellum medium screen on my 2012 Super Tenere for over 36,000 of the bike's more than 40,000 miles and it's never done that to my instrument cluster. And just for the record, I live in South Texas where we get lots of sun, it's more often fierce and brutally hot and bright, and my bike certainly has been out in that South Texas sun a ton in the nearly 3 years I've owned the motorcycle.

You're also in Texas, so you know what I mean about the sun in our state.

I'm sure the 'screen could act as a lens and do that, but like I said, it's never done it on mine. Do you park the bike in the same place every day, say on the sidestand (I usually park mine on the centerstand if possible), with the bike out in strong sun all day?

I'll bet Yamaha will cover that under warranty.

Thank you everyone for the replies. It makes sense that the windscreen could serve as a magnifying glass - but I would have never thought that would be the case. The Texas sun can be brutal at times - that's for sure! It is garage kept except for the days I park at work (maybe 3 days a week). I always park in the same place and on the side stand. I'll reach out to my dealer about warranty. Will follow up with their response about the warranty just so we have record of it on here.

Thank y'all!

I also have a Parabellum medium screen with no problem.

That said, windscreens melting instrument clusters is an old issue. Looking for a specific previous thread on this I Googled with the words:
motorcycle windscreen melted instrument

And found not only the one I wanted at ADVRider, but more including:

Stuff a baseball cap down there, or get one of those 'bikini' dust covers that just go over the screen back to the rear of the seats. Protects the dash, keeps the fuel from vaporizing so much, and keeps the seat from becoming a 1000 degrees.
cycleshade.com makes a two piece. I could prolly swing by there and have one custom fitted if my screen is similar to yours in shape.
Nelson-Rigg, Dowco, there are dozens.

Good find, thank you for sharing! I'm encouraged that it will be covered under warranty now.

It may be as simple as changing where you park the bike at work when you know it's going to be out in the sun for long hours, or by just using the centerstand instead of the sidestand. You might want to try those before you spend money on things that might cause you other issues - i.e. I've had motorcycle covers ruin paint finishes with scratches from dirt and dust getting up underneath them in wind, then there's the problem of melting them on hot engine parts, condensation as the bike cools off, rain, theft, etc.

Just FYI...

I have a Nelson-Rigg half cover. A lot easier to manage than those full dresser covers and it packs small. Great Idea to keep the top of the bike shaded.

Carry a product bag that you get a motorcycle or tech show. Slide it over the windshield and advertise your favorite insurance company at the same time.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Just an update - this IS being covered under warranty. Had to assess the inners for damage (there was none). Topical damage only.
