Getting ready for March Moto Madness in TN. Thought I'd check the air filter on my 2016. I got it in the fall of 2016 so a few rides here in WI that fall. Most of the miles were last year. I've got less than 15k miles. Yamaha recommends changing the stock filter at 24k miles unless you are riding in unusually wet or dusty areas. I admit I've been in both but didn't expect it to be this dirty. Glad I checked it. Guess I'll change it every year.

Mine only made it to ~14K. I'll probably keep the interval lower than required.
It is really surprising how dirty your filters are, one guy in Wisconsin, the other in Florida; not particularly dusty climates. If you were both in New Mexico or Nevada, I could see the filters being that dirty.

I think I am going to check mine at 10K now. I do ride on unpaved roads (not offroad per se) quite frequently.

All street riding here in Colorado, which is dry and dusty, I've come to the conclusion 30k miles works perfect for me. Use that figure on all the vehicals, 4 wheel or 2. Goldwing is like a four hour job to replace the filter. Nice to minimize much as possible. Super Tenere easy to replace at least, so doesn't hurt a bit to change earlier.

It almost looks like you rode through a wheat field or something. I've never seen that many grass bits in an air filter. The dirt probably came from having fun though, so ride on and just change the filter sooner. ::001::

Your close, pine needles. I try to do as much off pavement as I can. Love to take the Tenere where it's not supposed to be. Been riding dirt bikes my whole life (only 57). Fun to see where I can take it.

Coincidentally I happened to be changing my air filter today. It's been in the bike for 20,061 miles. The bike's seen its share of dusty dirty gravel and dirt roads in that time. For a reference point, this is what my filter looked like:

On my last bike which was a Triumph Explorer, I changed the filter at 20K which was Triumphs recommendations and it was solid black. I could not believe the bike was running. It is a real pain to change the air filter on those bikes. I live in Colorado and do a lot of dusty fire roads. I will likely change my filter going forward every 10K. I am so glad I have a S10 now.
