The Garmin Zumo also has a dirt road option. Works pretty well.

Which Zumo is that, Mark? My 660 has an off road option, but when I tried that, it wanted me to ride directly across a field. Seemed like that mode was like the crow flies or something.

I've had a lot of success in finding dirt roads to ride on by using Tyre to Travel. If the roads are on Google Earth, then they're available to use on this mapping program. I've found all sorts of forestry roads, logging roads, BLM roads, etc. You can zoom in on the road using Google Earth or Google Maps and see the actual road surface, so you have an idea of the kind of road surface you'll be riding. I've ended up on roads that were little more than a sandy doubletrack through a wilderness area, that I found using Tyre. You can create the routes on your computer and then upload them to a Garmin or Tom Tom GPS, or even to your OsmAND equipped android phone. The only downside is that you have to have an internet connection in order to use the Tyre program, as it has to be able to access Google Maps in order to work.

You can save your routes in standard .gpx format, and even email them to someone else. If they don't have Tyre, they can still plug their GPS into their computer and drag and drop the routes onto their Garmin.

I have the 390. And it does like you to take the non existent road that was last used 50 years ago. It has put me on dirt roads that dead end into farm fields, or barbed wire fences that have existed at least 10+ years. But for the most part (80%?) it works well. And the excitement of turning around on that very loose sandy road, and remember the way out....

Last summer I was in the Sierra's with my ex on her Harley. With just the curvy road selected, and avoid unpaved roads, it put us on some dirt roads that I turned around on due to the road becoming a place that the Harley did not belong on. And the road's all ended in a dead end to boot.

Map last updated just before that trip. Usually I try to check for any map update anytime I use basecamp to plan a route. Next time I am on Garmin's site, I will look for a way to report stuff like this.
