Given the external design of the S-10, did the motor already exists in another model. kinda like the banshee had RD 350 motors. Surely (don't call me Shirley) they did not build the engine, thinking that the oil filter and other items being exposed was a good idea. If they did, what were they thinking?? Anyone out there know for sure. I worked in the motorcycle industry for ten years during the late seventies and saw them do some weird things, but this seems to top it. ::021::

Excellent question - I have wondered why the oil filter was so exposed myself. You really date yourself with the RD 350 analogy - RZ 350 would have been far enough back.

Can't prove it but I am almost sure it is unique to the S10. Maybe 99.9% sure. ::) At least I have never seen another model that shares the motor. Your point about the exposed oil filter is a good one but keep in mind that there would have been many factors that impacted where they put it in the end. Like keeping it exposed enough for easy maintenance, and close to main oil passages without having to add extra passages or external piping.
And it hasn't proved to be a major problem for most of us. Personally, I have 66K miles of mostly road use with zero issues and the more serious off road users go for good skid plate. As always YMMV LOL

It was an all new model engine built specifically for the Super Ténéré. It has borrowed a lot of technology and design history from the TDM model bikes though.

The RD350 was air cooled. I think you were referring to the RZ350 which is what the Banshee evolved from.

Rd/Rz, rode a RD350 for awhile, but never a Banshee, so you have to forgive me for not knowing it was water cooled, just knew it was a 350 two stroke twin. ::003:: ::021::

The location of the oil filter is certainly not unique to the S10. Some type of mounting near the front of the engine is very common, including other adventure bikes - it's probably the easiest place to put it.

The oil filter is strategically located to enable Yamaha to relieve you of an extra 150 notes for a protection device. ;D

$150? It was $320 + powder coating for my Hepco & Becker.

FWIW Mine has taken several hard hits, all were well behind the oil filter.

The Banshee was the very first Yamaha (or any power sport product) I ever bought for myself....that motor was amazing.

800 Tiger and f800GS has the oil filter sticking out the front of the engine like a sore thumb just ready for a chunk of gravel to poke a hole in it,my 98' Africa Twin has the biggest bashplate known to man but Honda hide the filter at the rear of the engine.

Having owned a 1982 RD350 I can tell you it was liquid cooled. The difference between the RD and RZ was the addition of the Power Valves in 1984. I owned both and loved those bikes! The older 70's 350and 400 were air cooled.

Same location as on their V4 in the Royal Star... same filter too.
The TDM comes to mind for a big twin.

10éréRide I believe in the US the RD's where air cooled & the RZ's where liquid cooled. Some markets had the RD-LC but in the USA it was called RZ.

The difference is that you're in Canada. What you had was an RD350LC, which wasn't sold in the US. When they finally did bring it to the states, it was called a 350RZ. Going back to the original post, the Banshee engine didn't come from the original RD350, but it did come from the RZ.

When your ready to sell it, let me know. A certain 2 year old I know will need it in 10 years or so. Her name is Montesa and her moto oriented parents would be thrilled to find one.
