I am riding my S10 to Star Days in Longmont. Will leave Des Moines Saturday morning 7/18 and stay the night in Denver. I would like to ride with "The Usual Suspects" on Sunday. I am not a single tracker, but would like to see some dirt and easy stuff. What I would like from yall:

1. Somebody to put a ride together for Sunday, preferably south. I was at Ft Carson 72-3 and rode my 550 honda to the top of Pikes Peak. All I really remember is carbs do not like 14K altitude. Think I hit the oxygen machine myself!

2. A cheap motel near the start to stay Saturday night, Motel 6, super 8 or private. Cheap, clean, with bed and shower as I will be tired! Near the start of the Sunday ride.

3. I need to be in Longmont say 3 ish on Monday. So if somebody can put a northern ride together on Monday I would be in. (Provided I survive Sunday. You guys break legs!) I read that somebody works weekends but could ride during the week! Plan away.

4. So if we ride on Monday I need a place to stay Sunday night. Would prefer the same place as Saturday so I do not need to carry a weeks worth of stuff on the ride. Or I could drop my stuff in somebodies garage Sunday morning and pick it up Sunday night.

Looking forward to this!

Hello,
We typically ride Saturday but I'm sure we can slide our riding day around...!

We typically ride west of Denver, meeting in Morrison, Golden or Arvada. Pull up any on line map of the Denver area, you'll find them relative to the city of Denver.

On motels, there are tons. West side suburbs like Arvada, Wheat Ridge or Lakewood are good bets in particular if you want to be near the good riding.

Getting from Denver to CO Springs would be a long ways on pavement or an all day deal on trails getting there and back.

For Monday you could loop up Golden Gate Canyon State Park to highway 119 north and detour to Rollins Pass. Then up to Nederland and north on highway 72 and down St. Vrain canyon to Lyons and make your way to Longmont.

I should have clarified on Sunday. Since Monday will be north, did not want Sunday to be north. West works.

Saturday will be all slab with the totally fun state of Nebraska to cross! Glad I have cruise!

Sounds like you'll be coming down I 76.

I'd look for a hotel/motel early. There are rarely inexpensive places to stay around here.

It turns out that I am not going to able to ride that day. Sorry. Feel free to get in touch if you want suggestions for places to ride while you are in the area.

Cheers,
Craig

Yes. Leaving Saturday morning for Denver area. Would like a starting place for Sunday so I can find a motel near. Guess I will stay at the same place Sunday night so I can drop gear.

There's a Conoco gas station at the intersection of C470 & Morrison Rd. That's a good spot, can't miss it if you exit the expressway (C470) and head towards Morrison.

We tend to leave early to beat traffic. We typically meet, gas up etc and roll out by 7:00. Sometimes earlier.

Your 7 is my 8, so I get to sleep in!

Thanks. See you then and there.

Booked the Howard Johnson 12100 W 44th Ave, Wheat Ridge, for Saturday and Sunday nights. Can't wait to ride on Sunday after 700 miles in mid 90 degrees on I-80 and 76 on Saturday. ::014::

Question, how cold will it be up in the mountains. Denver should be 63 Saturday night to 86 on Sunday, but how much will it drop off going up? I can remember riding my 500 Honda to the top of Pikes Peak and freezing 40 years ago. Need to make sure I have enough layers with me.

Anybody up for a ride from the Conoco on Monday Morning towards Longmont?

Don't bother looking at the weather report until a couple of days out. If it's raining I'll bail on you, the trails will be a mess.
Towns to look at the forecast will be Bailey, Deckers and Jefferson.

It should be in the low 60s in the AM, but like I said, don't bother looking until a couple of days out. Even then they are frequently wrong.

Your balls will either be a hot sweaty mess or ice cubes. 50/50 chance of either. Dress accordingly ::025::

Have fun - those are some good roads up that way.

I always carry my rain gear and warm base layers just in case of either. Just be prepared.

Depending on the planned route for Sunday, I may join you guys...

This is why 'the usual suspects' carry a lot of gear in large tail bags or saddle bags. Even in the summer it's a good idea to bring extra layers or wear them and have room to strip them off. Not to mention at least some extra water to fill your drinking bladder, even when it's chilly I intake a lot of water.

Yes, a reference to Bushy's thread on hard panniers.

Sunday weather is looking like a high probability of rain. It'll typically rain in the afternoon after 1:00.
Lets keep an eye on it and touch base tomorrow.

So if we start at 7 or 7:30 we can still get something in?

Not sure I can keep up, but I want to try!

If we get going by no later than 7:30 we should be OK. The weather sites are saying rain at about 1:00 or 2:00, that's fairly typical.

I'm planning on going out US 285 towards Connifer and Bailey and jumping off to the south of that road. I'll be a mix of gravel and clay, the clay is bad news when it's wet. I'll bring my maps and run down the route with you before we leave. Keep in mind the majority of miles will be on pavement getting to and from the trails.

I'm thinking we can get out and hit some fun stuff and be back in town for a late lunch. We can still get some good riding in without an epic 6 to 8 hour ride.

By the way, I have a blue 2012 S10 and I'll have Wolfman saddle bags on the back and Wolfman tank bag.
