When I first got my bike I was a bit disappointed in the roughness in the 3500-4000 range. That improves a lot with miles on it and doing a TBS also helps considerably. With over 5,000 miles on my bike, I never notice a roughness at any RPM. I think the simplest thing you can do is ride it again and make sure it is in S mode. You will probably still feel that rough band around 3500, but as most here will attest, it will get much better with some miles.

+1. But I'm still not clear on what he means by 'notchy,' and he hasn't translated that clearly. I finally guessed that the 'juggling marbles' part might translate to the harmonic under acceleration in the 3500 - 4000 range, but 'notchy' either sounds like he's not used to the on/off throttle response of most OEM fuel injection or maybe the TPS is out of adjustment. I don't get that part.

+1 Tremor. I also interpreted the marbles thing to be the rough patch around 3500. Not clear on notchy either, unless they did not adjust the freeplay in the throttle cable during setup.

You got it!

BTW, I've been riding bikes for forty years and have a Colorado Class A CDL, export fire trucks and large apparatus around the world... have driven almost all types of gas and diesel apparatus, almost every type of transmission too.

I'm a 'gear-head'.

Let's see what the dealer comes up with re: the modes when his shop opens in an hour or so. I'm curious to find out.

Aaaaaah, don't know why I didn't think about that. That could be the 'notchy' problem!

Just returned from the dealer...

Bike was in TC2 and Sport modes yesterday when I rode it. There was free play in the throttle cable. Dealer corrected all three.

Took 'er out in no-TC mode and Touring mode. Ran A LOT smoother.

Talked about adding heated grips (not cheap) to the Black S10 just out of the crate.

My neighbor, very good friend and riding buddy wants to test ride the bike as well. I trust his opinion as we both share the same qualitative approach.

Will make decision tomorrow! ;)

53 years old.
Got drivers license at 15 (limit 100CC, or something like that) and got a Suzuki Ts50. Street Legal.

Been on 2 wheels since. Lots of bikes. Have 7 or 8 now, counting street-dirt-4wheel.

Since about 2002, I discovered the V-twin when I bought the wife an SV650. That ended my inline-4 days. Been on thumpers and Twins since.
Recently when the S10 became my object of desire, thanks to this and the other ADV forum, I was farting around on my KLR, KTM SM950, and VTR 1000.
When the PDP S10 got "orphaned" at a nearby Yamaha dealer, I snatched it in 10 minutes. No test drive.
Leaving the dealership, I owned it. Paid cash.

Here is the point I am building up to:

I was very underwhelmed by "the motor" on my ride home. Messed with both fuel maps and all the TC settings. Still no great love for how the motor felt. But EVERYTHING else was intriguing. I immediately set out on an "Adventure". Texas to North Carolina and rode the "Gap" and various routes all around. Nice weather all the way. I was warming up to the "motor". It started to make more sense to me as I became more aware of the "mission" of this bike.

On the return trip to Texas, I had nothing but foul weather. Nasty stuff. Rain and wind and WIND and RAIN!

Over the 2 or 3 days of inclement conditions, the bike truly revealed its genius. It is so much more than how the motor feels.

And by the way, I don't know if it is because I am so won over, but the motor seems elegant to me now. Smooth as glass. Just short of 9000 miles.

Don't judge this bike on such a narrow basis. I am not saying you will like it, regardless. It's not for everyone.

And finally, just to put it another way, I now think I might like a Gs1100/1150/1200! Before you have me strung up and hog tied at the stake, hear me out.
I have never desired a GS. I never even gave them a second glance. I didn't "get them".
But now they make far more sense. In fact, I THANK BMW for the S10! And since it is the dead-in-the-center-bulls-eye target that the designers of the S10 were aiming at, it must be a bike I would enjoy after all!

Also, nobody at the dealership showed me any of the 'modes' to change or vary! There were four people who easily could have taken a moment's time to do so.

Perhaps they did not know the bike as evidenced by most of them not having ridden it as of yet.
Most likely they don't know squat about the bike other then the price. This is common at the UJM dealerships IMHO anyway. Anyone on this forum could go in and do a better job of explaining the S10 to the salesman most likely. For the life of me I can't figure this out and its not any particular brand or store but a great percentage of them with sales people that have nearly zero knowledge of the product they are peddling. I know if I made my living selling something I would know the product inside and out. Then again I am a freakin motorcycle nut that has a sickness........ :-[

You will enjoy the BMW.
I've been fortunate to own several BMW GS's from the old R100 to the current R1200 Twin Cam and though they are unique and very competent ( expensive! ) bikes, I always found the engines to feel somewhat " antiquey ." Hey Harley's been getting away with it for 100 years but even BMW is being forced to abandon the old air cooled engine for a more modern water cooler which I'm sure will be unique and very competent and even more expensive !

Glad you were able to ride it again and the results were more favorable. Just a thought on the OEM grips - there are after market options out there for a lot less money that may work just as well for you. I use the Symtec heaters and love them - at a fraction of the cost.

Good luck!

Went to the dealer with my neighbor and fellow rider, good friend, he wanted to demo the bike. The winds were ferocious as many who live around here know.

We talked about the bike after his ride, he liked it... better than the GS, gave me his positive critique.

Bottom line, it was a personal decision... being that I have a relatively new RKC, one more year's warranty, decided to ride the heck out of it before buying another current/new bike.

It was purely a conservative, financial decision... nothing more or less.

Had a money market check in my wallet, had the insurance quote from Geico, but something said to me inside... just wait, be patient. I like the bike, it's going nowhere, the last few days felt a 'little fast'...

The manager are I are on good terms, we shook hands and I will talk with him again. ::003::

Nothing wrong with that logic! Lots of time before serious riding weather comes to Colorado!!!

...perhaps, knowing how close you were to poppin' for the deal he laid out -

in a couple of days/weeks he just might sweeten the deal with a better price.

Odds are in your favor for that happening.

Good luck on the purchase - whenever it happens

Nothing wrong with that at all. In my experience the best deals are made when you are sitting in front of the salesman with your checkbook in hand, ready to commit. Until then it's all fun and games.

Blue Tenere at Blackmans Cycle, Emmaus, PA 610-965-9865 for $12,900 plus sales tax and tags.

$13,500 is too much.
I'm happy to say I snagged this exact bike at Blackman's Cycle for $11,999......$13,296 OTD with PA tax, tags and fees on Thursday. Seemed like a decent deal to me based on my research. I went back and forth a couple of times, but in the end, they were eager to move it. I pick-up my Blue S10 tomorrow morning ::012:: I'm psyched. YamaPA, we'll have to try and meet-up. I'm between Reading and Lancaster.

$11,999 ???. That's stellar. It does sound like they nabbed a few extra bucks from you for "fees," since $576 is high for title and doc fees. In any case, I'd take that deal, but that was a leftover PDP bike so it was cheaper to start with. I'm going to do a sweep this spring of the local dealers and see who is willing to deal.

That is an absolutely kick-arse price. The dealer that I went to was 'also' eager to move his black S10... but for almost fifteen hundred dollars MORE. ;)

Kudos. ::003::
