Hi. Unfortunatelly the problem isn't solved yet. The bike has been in the repair shop for a period but they are not able to fix it. Yesterday I called the Yamaha dealer (unfortunatelly the shop is quite a distance from where I live) and asked for a time at their repair shop. They where very busy but I can probably get a time later on. The problem is that I have to take vacation from my work to get there. Keep you informed.
I had the the same problem as Bowman. Cruise would not set after service (valve check). GV550 was dead on. The throttle switch assy was the culprit. This is a wire about 9in. long with a micro switch on one end and a double female plug on the other end. The micro switch attaches to the throttle body. In my case the tech would get continuity or NOT depending on the lay of the wire. This can make grown men cry. Good luck to you Bowman. I hope this helps.

Because of this and other things I decided to sell the bike. Maybe I will get another ST in the future (I have quite a lot of accessories) but not right now.

Wow!!! I would shove a shoe in someone's ass at the repair shop that would cause you to ultimately sell the bike!! Well, water under the bridge now but that is an aweful outcome. You mention 'other things,' were these also motorcycle related? If not, no need to get into anything personal. Such a shame to give up on a great motorcycle because of someone else's complete incompetence.

I will try to raise money to buy a new ST but probably not until next year. For now I will live with my old BMW R1100GS which is also a great motorcycle but it is not new and has quite a lot of km:s. But it's a trusty old bike called Black Beauty. The "other" reasons I mentioned is that my ST (which I sold) had been abused by the prior owner and it was quite a work to get it nice again. When I bought the ST I didn't see that there was cracks in the panels (covered by duct tape). But I liked the bike and will by a new one as mentioned.

Bumping this thread as I'm dealing with the same thing. And it just so happens to be happening after a recent valve check and clearance I did at 40,000 miles. I'll be going through the diagnosis mentioned here and hopefully find a solution for my bike. I've read many of the other CC related threads here too. I can rebuild a top end but I hate tracking down electrical issues. I did do a quick brake light check and it's not staying on. I'm hoping to post back with positive results down the road.

Have you had the brake switch recall done? It was the source for a lot of CC problems.

Hey Sierra1, I talked to my dealer service department today and they confirmed that my bike has NOT had the brake switch recall done. So they are ordering the part and should have it next week. Thanks again for the info.

Today I went through the diagnostic process. I started with diagnostic 82 and ran the checks. The clutch, brakes, and throttle all failed. I was hoping to narrow it down to one of them, but no, that didn't happen. How could they all fail? Then I ran diagnostic 83. Both brakes passed that one. which makes it even more confusing. I accidentally erased the fault codes (s/b 90 or 91 based on the manual) so I'll run the bike and see if I can get them to show up again so I can go through the troubleshooting outlined in the manual.

Wow, that's beyond me. I don't know how the clutch could fail a diagnostic. The bad switch could be the culprit for the others.

Time for an update and solution in regards to my problem. I took the bike to the dealer for the brake switch recall in hopes of fixing the CC problem. Unfortunately, it was not related. However, the problem was located and the fix was inexpensive. As it turns out, there is a small micro switch near the throttle cable connections on the throttle body that kills the CC when the throttle is moved. Apparently, when I removed the throttle body to do the vavle clearance adjustment, the small wires on this switch broke. The wires broke right at the switch so no way to splice them. A new switch was around $30 and it's an easy replacement job. Thanks.
