What have owners in the UK paid for the first service? According to my service book it states that the first service labour costs are not charged by the supplying dealer.

I have just booked my S10 in for it's first one next week, the dealer wants to charge £130 including parts and labour. When I queried this I was told it was a misprint in the book!

This morning I spoke to customer service at Yamaha UK. I was told the 'free labour' only applied until the beginning of January and it was up to the dealer. The nice lady said she would speak to the dealer and get back to me. I wait with baited breath.

I have never paid for a first service on any new bike I have had, it has always in the UK been parts only on a first service which basically amounts to oil and filter.

Mine was completely free, but it varies by dealer, and possibly how you negotiated when you bought it. £130 sounds about right if you had to pay for it.

I managed to negotiate a free first service as part of the deal.

BUT

The dealer told me that Yamaha have recently followed the trend and removed all of the subsidy from the first service, probably to keep the headline price of the bike down. If my info is correct the bill will include both parts and labour at full wack and will probably be more than you were expecting.

Mike

EDIT Iv'e just checked my Warranty Handbook for my new S10 reg on 1 March 2015 and it clearly states 'The service will be carried out without charge for labour (by the supplying Dealer), for the original owner, unless otherwise agreed. Parts such as filters and oils are chargeable' You've got it in writing in an official Yamaha booklet that came with the bike. Yamaha may change their policy but if they don't remove that paragraph from their official Warranty Booklet they can't charge you for labour

Thanks Mike, I've also just seen your reply on UKGSer. I did mention to the person at Yamaha UK that having this information in the service book is 'misrepresentation' and I may consult with the local trading standards department. It was at this point when she offered to contact my dealer and has promised to get back to me this afternoon.
I note you are in Lancashire as am I. Who was your supplying dealer? Mine was Millenium at St Helens.

I bet if you call ten different Yamaha shops, you'll get ten different prices. I wouldn't be surprised to see one dealer do it for $75 and a dealer 50 miles down the road try to charge $275.

I bought mine from Keith Dixon Motorcycles who, coincidently have just been taken over by the Keith Mason group who own Millenium and most other Northern England Yamaha dealers.

Found the same thing with the San Francisco Bay area in N. Cal. 125.00 to 450.00, depending on where you go.

Just bought my own materials to do my first 4k service.

My first service was £120.15 at Ian Bells in Northumberland. I could have had it done for half that where I bought the bike from at Chorley Yamaha. Due to the distance it simply wasn't worth it however as it would cost a fair chunk in petrol and more importantly time.

If I'm not mistaken, the 600 mile service is change the rear gear oil, the engine oil/filter, check tension on the spokes and the exhaust header nuts. All this can
be done in your driveway in an hour labor free. Buy oil and a filter for $30 and be done with it. Side benefit is you did it, you know you did it, you know you did it without destroying something by trying to do 1hr work in 15 minutes time.
Of course many other things may be listed to be done, like check brakes, check fuel lines. You think dealer will do any of this, you have more confidence than I do. They know, I know, the whole riding public knows fuel lines and brakes are not bad at 600 miles, so do you think the dealer actually does this? Sure they do, they do. They claim they do anyways.
I did mine too, saved the receipts and documented it on the owner's manual. The local dealer had quoted me around $250.00. I am glad I did it, it help me bond with my bike (kind of assisting on your child's birth) and you would not believe the thickness and color of the rear gear oil.

DIY'frs: note that when the dealer did my 600 mi. service, they had a list of about 15 - 20 bolts and nuts that got a torque check.

I just paid $167 with no oil or oil filter change and no final drive oil change.
I would call the dealer if I were you. Both of those items are due at 600 miles.
