After returning from Bikeweek @ Daytona Beach I left my S10 at my dealer for some repair work because I was involved in a accident. Today I returned to the dealer to check on my bike and it looks like a 10 year old bike that has lived in Fl all its life! Many if not all of the non painted bolts, axle, axle nut, banjo bolts on the front brakes lines, both wheels spokes are pitted etc. each item I am talking about is turning white/an ugly blue. The bike was washed twice in 6 days at the hotel I stayed in plus we hit a lot of rain on the return trip home where my bike was in an open trailer. This is just nuts the bike has under 2.000 miles and is 3 months old in which I didn't ride it from December until I took off riding it for Bikeweek. It is a new bike 2k mi and 3 months old. This bike has never been off road, never been wash with anything but car wash soap & water and I rode down with a buddy who picked up a brand new GL 1800, he rode mile for mile with me, parked his bike next to mine each night and it show's NO rust corrosion, etc.

The service manager was off today but I want him to contact Yamaha and I want to talk to them and find out what they are going to do. I am wanting to hear from any members here on the forum who have similar problems I do remember at least one other member here getting his spokes replaced I think two times. I am sure many other S10's in states like FL or where they have been exposed to even a small amount of road salt are showing this. This is totally unacceptable on a bike 3 months old.

There ain't a nice looking spoke amongst us. Off-road or on. Mine, I admit, are PITiful looking.

The rest of the bike? Hmmmm. Too dirty to tell. Hope the dirt and grime are protecting the finsh underneath, just in case I DO wash it someday.

All kidding aside, I suppose the Tenere ain't Florida proof. That does suck.

I live in FL with 22000 miles on my Tenere. Other than tarnished spokes I don't have those problems. I do stay off the beach as a rule.

Did you forget you live in the rust belt where there is salt, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride spread on the hwy when DOT hears an inkling there may be snow? Combine the salt along side the road and water to spread evenly across the bike and you have your tarnished nuts you are talking about. Nothing the bike did, just the DOT!!!
Just one way for the states to cut back when they say they are broke. Nope, they spread it anyway.

I made the mistake of riding home a new Honda ST1300 from Michigan to Ohio on Jan 11th 2003. It was 19 outside for the 90 mile rride home. Snow was flying but the roads were mostly dry. The bolts started to do the same thing you are talking about from that moment on. I should of waited, but oh well.

Sorry to hear that Doug. I've had mine for a year and a half and I keep her outside under a bike cover. No rust on her, but I have been off road only a couple of times, 24k of mostly highway riding.
I have waxed all the blue paint and washed her twice, but that's about it. ::021::

Left my machine covered, on the little patio space for almost two weeks during nothing but wet, drizzly, snowy weather. Pulled off the cover on the first sunny day and found this.

Found a couple of spots (like the clutch lever bolt) that were showing a bit of rust as well. Just gotta clean it up and see about keeping it dryer. LAter this spring I'll take a thorough look see and get after anything important with some gel.

Having rust on the rotors is not that uncommon. Non use and humidity will cause it.

Those that are having problems with rust and corrosion may want to consider using ACF50. This is a great product to use after you clean the bike and let it dry. It will work, but you will need to clean the bike.. ::025::

Rode mine from Jax to Daytona a bunch of times down the coast and the only rust I have ever seen was last summer after returning from a 3 week trip where it rained most of the trip. Of all places I had/still do have rust under the gas cap on the edge of the gas tank fill hole.

if you notice on the rotors the only location that is rusting is the surface that has been in contact with the friction material. the reasoning behind this is the semi-metallic pads, or rather that there is literally metal (steel) in the pad. it transfers through contact and it rusts which causes the stainless to rust. Be glad we don't have ductile iron rotors...if you don't like rust.

That sucks....
My lady had her bike in Daytona a few years ago then after it sat in the back of one of our semi trailers for 3-4 weeks before it got moving to the west coast. When it showed up in California it looked like a complete POS, she broke down in tears. I had to tear the entire bike down to bones an replace/polish/powder coat almost everything on the bike. Friggin night mare-

I'm lucky to live in the dry west/south west and have zero issues with corrosion/rust. Not sure what the dealer will be able to do for you..

Even living out west I wax/complete detail everything on our bikes 1-2 times a month(spokes also) and things always look brand new..

Hope it works out for you, hope your healing up well..

You are not alone.

I had most of the shiny stuff on mine replaced under warranty including spokes, brake lines, gear lever, brake bolts, panel fasteners, final drive vent....etc.

The spokes have gone again after 6 months......

I look after the bike well and it's kept dry in a ventilated garage.

I do use the bike all year (in Scotland) but I've never seen a bike this bad for corrosion. My 6 yr old Honda ST1300 looked like new compared to the 2 year old S10.

It's a big bone of contention for me on what is generally a great bike.

I started using Motul wash on my BMW when I noticed specs of rust/corrosion.
Been using it on my Tenere with good results too.

Motul Moto Wash is a biodegradable concentrated cleaner and degreaser for the entire motorcycle.

Spray over the entire motorcycle: plastics, fairings, paint, varnish, metallic parts. Leave to work for 2 minutes. Rub with a sponge. Rinse thoroughly with water. Motul Moto Wash effectively removes all traces of the most ingrained dirt, protecting paints, metallic parts and varnish by leaving an anti-corrosive film. Do not use Motul Moto Wash in the sun or on a hot surface.

Bought mine used, one year old with 2500 miles on it. Now close to 9000 miles, ride it to work rain or shine and touring on weekends. Park as is and wash once a week or so. No rust on the spokes or anywhere else.

I have been using ACF for a few years now, a good application (via compressor) will last summer bikers a year, I will be doing the Tenere in Spring (After the winter salt has cleared) and again around October (when the salting is likely to start again)

I also use a cloth dampened with ACF to wipe around exposed metal (spokes etc) after each good wash, and try not to over-wash the bike, I know people who will wash a bike after every ride - and as a sportsbike riding power ranger I used to be a bit like that, but prefer to spend more time riding than washing these days.

No corrosion on my bike yet, it has survived its first winter very well.

I've never used ACF50, but hear a lot of good things about it.

I'm a huge fan of Fluid Film. I use it on my snow plow, I undercoat my winter truck with it, I spray it on my agricultural equipment. LOVE it.

Thanks for the url on that product. It seems like it may be better than acf 50. And it comes in at a good price point.
