Coolant overflowing

A bit more diagnostical (is that even a word?) work revealed that it seems to indeed come from the thermostat housing. I topped up the coolant and ran it till the fan came on. One thing of concern are the rubber bits floating at the top of the rad, as seen in the photo. Don't have a clue as to where they would be from. The cap looks ok.20201115_143130.jpg20201115_143748.jpg

Do a full flush and catch everything through a metal sieve. Im guessing its going to be a seal that was not properly seated and eventually disintegrated. Time for a full coolant path flush and inspection.

Good find.

Gonna need to pull the lowest waterpump hose off so you can get a good flow for the flush, ain't gonna work through the little bolt hole.
Wow, almost all those gasket bits have a curve to them, don't like that...

I found this gasket set from the S10 ... but there doesn't seem to be anything like what you have

The coolant on the back of the engine seems to suggest this.

It looks an awful lot like the above thermostat is shedding pieces on the coolant stream. First order of business tomorrow morning is to order a thermostat. It's a pain in the backside to change, but it's a cheap fix. The parts fiche doesn't see to show a gasket or o-ring on the housing. The FSM doesn't mention it either.

Yep, the gasket is included on the t-stat. I've done a lot of those on the automotive side, never saw one disintegrate. Looking forward to seeing your next pictures.

Flushed the system, no more bits came out. Called the local shops, the thermostat is backordered. (!) Found one on fleabay, should be here before Christmas. Not the greatest, but better now than next May. Figure while I'm there, may as well change the plugs too. And while I'm there, with 25000 miles on it, may as well dig and check the valve clearances. So much for a small coolant leak, lol!

Flea bay vendor came back to me, back ordered, will issue a refund. I suspect everyone else that advertises this item is the same (Revzilla, Bike Bandit, etc.). I'm just going to order from my local shop, and hope something comes out before next Summer.

Have you pulled your thermostat yet? Bad seal? With the t-stat in hand you might be able to find a good auto parts store that has a good variety of rubber seals that might be a good fit. With the diameter and temp range you can probably get the thermostat as well. Probably from a Chevy V-6... Doesn't have to be a Yamaha part.

I really don’t understand all these back order parts from Yamaha, I have NEVR experienced a back order part from Honda . When I needed Tenere rear wheel bearings a few years ago a few different Yamaha dealers said they had been on back for over a month so I bought aftermarket bearings, the whole deal cost me a week in a motel waiting for some pretty basic parts.
