Coolant (Antifreeze)

I changed the coolant of my bike for the second time. First time I used Motul Motocool Factory line with good results. But now I used Peak Cool which is compatible with DexCool. Both coolant are phosphate and silicate free. I did not know what dexcool was until I did some research and found nothing but bad reviews of it.
Comparing both coolants, The motul one has higher boiling point. The Peak coolant is widely used in cars but it can be used in motorcycles too since it is indicated in the bottle.
Have not ridden the bike on the Peak coolant, but I am bit concerned about harming the pump or the whole cooling system.
What do you think of the Peak coolant?? Should I flush the system and go back to the Motul thing??? What on earth is Dexcool??

Thanks

Re: what coolant do you use?

I changed my coolant once and used engine ice. It was around 20.00 for a 2 quart jug. That's all that is needed on our bikes. I don't have an opinion on it, but at least there aren't any bad reviews of it. Seems a lot of Motorsport enthusiasts like it and doesn't cause any issues like the Dex-cool stuff does. Haven't used Peak antifreeze.

I drained the original, flushed with de mineralized water and then re-filled with engine ice. I also siphoned out the over flow bottle and topped up with what was left of the 2 quart jug. No issues.

I have used engine ice in motocross bikes for years and it's in the S10 too.

Re: what coolant do you use?

I use Toyota Long Life Coolant on Japanese made engines and radiator systems. Something I read about Silicates, Phosphorus content that wears the pump or seals (can't quite recall the exact issues). I know that Japanese cooling systems usage of materials are different from Europeans or Americans, so choose the coolant carefully. I know Engine Ice should be fine for all cooling systems when I did a research years ago.

Re: what coolant do you use?

Dex is alright when everything is perfect. Distilled water only. Absolutely do not top up with anything else. Do not change over to Dex if anything else is in the system. The coolant itself is fine in the aluminum systems. They went to it because of electrolysis issues. But it's so sensitive to cross contamination that it's not really the best choice in the real world. Peak may have done things a bit differently. It's a Long Life, but I'm not sure about any sensitivity issues with Peak. Does it say it is a Dex-Cool, or that it's compatible with Dex?

I have searched the forum but still not sure which antifreeze is the right one to use on my S10.

I know the one that Honda supply is highly recommended on this forum but our local Honda dealership dont stock them.

I can get Castrol antifreeze but they have two products available, Radicool SF (pink colour) and Radicool NF (blue colour)

So my question is, which one wil be the best to use, the SF or the NF ?

Now that is the problem, my local Yamaha dealer dont stock yamacool, and like I had mention Honda also dont stock the Honda anti freeze.

Most dealers around here in South Africa will just suply you with local brands like Castrol, BP ext, and to be honest I think there are only a few of them that know there is a diffirence between anti freeze.

I had also see on Castrol web site that they have a motorcycle specific anti freeze, but when I contact the local Castrol suplier they said they dont know about it and never had it stocked before.

Yamacool. It's what came in your bike, no question about compatibility. It works and it's cheap.

::026:: With today modern engines, I wouldn't use anything other than OE. And even then you have to be careful. Jeep has two different coolant formulas, H.O.A.T. & O.A.T., listed for the Wranglers. I've been told you don't want to mix the formulas, and the only distributor is Jeep.

Agree, I also like to use genuine service parts, will ask my local dealer if they can order but I think it might come in with a heavy price tag.

This is not rocket science. Make sure to use a ethylene glycol (EG) "silicate free" antifreeze and you're OK. So many cars use silicate free AF now that it should be available at any auto parts.

I am about to change coolant,so I have to ask,why "silicate free" is must have?
I searched inside service manual But I couldn't find anything about it,except this "High-quality ethylene glycol antifreeze containing corrosion inhibitors for aluminum engines"
I have 2 easy options from Motorex (dealer is my friend) http://www.motorex.com/index.cfm?oid=1147&lang=en&webtoolDbTemp=eintragDetail&eintragId=7687 http://www.motorex.com/index.cfm?oid=1147&lang=en&webtoolDbTemp=eintragDetail&kategorieId=3&eintragId=7685
Also I have find this http://www.bickers-online.co.uk/netalogue/filedownloads/Motorex%20KTM%20coolant%20recommendations.pdf which is for KTM bikes of course, but has some notes at bottom.....

Does anyone even still sell antifreeze containing silicates anymore?
