I was actually being a Y.E.S. snob.

But again, I also advised ignoring me. I was bored this afternoon. Under the weather. Generally feeling ornery.

OK, Folks... And I'll bet you can easily guess this one...

Can anybody tell me *WHY* that statement to notify the the NHTSA appears in the owners manual? ;)

P

p.s. - and here's a hint... it appears in the owners manual of every vehicle legally sold in the USA... What was it that somebody was saying about "bureaucracy"? ::025:: sesame

p.p.s. - oh, and Blu... you really need to work on that spelling! ::019::

Does it matter why it's in there?

Spelling, yea I know,it old fingers, but you get the message right?

I'm beginning to think you'll a bit sore about buying me a beer. Hey if it makes ya fell better I'll let ya slide... ::001::

Hey! I'm more than happy to buy you a beer. I'll probably end up buyin' ya' more than one, and certainly would'a bought ya' one even without any bet! ::003::

And yes, it *DOES* matter why it's in the owners manual, particularly in reference to this discussion... It's in there because it's federally mandated in the USA that such a statement to contact the NHTSA be in all owners manuals of all motor vehicles sold in the USA. In other words, if Yamaha wants to sell the bike in the USA such a statement has to be in there. They have no choice. It's the law. ::024::

Has nothing to do with whether Yamaha actually wants anybody to contact the NHTSA or not. ::025::

You're right Dallara nothing matter unless you say it does. ::002::

Pho kit, had enough of your sniping on this thread. I'll report back when and if I hear from Yamaha Customer Support.

Big Blu , over and out. ::001::

Gotcha', Blu... ::008::

If you comment it's relevant, but if I comment I'm "sniping" and ::002:: , among other things, right?

I wanted to reply before you could do one of your defecting edits... ::025::

Now I gotta' remember that I'm not supposed to comment, even in a thread I started!!! ???

...OK sorry, but so many recalls are so dumb to me and I've been down that road too many times. Save the recalls for the real safety issues. Yes a wheel locks up at 75mph is a good reason to recall, a headlight? No.

Amen, Ron! Amen & Hallelujah!!! ::012::

Funny you mention it, too... Here I've got over 35,000 miles on my Super Tenere and - Heaven Forbid!!! - I've never had the fuel pump seal recall done!!! :D

Looked at it a lot when I've had the tank up, but it's never leaked, or looked like it was going to leak, or worried me in the slightest, so I guess I'll just continue to ride along, oblivious to the obvious "safety hazard" I present to myself and the world!!! ::025::

Hey, wait - that's no fair, Dallara - you often reference the owners manual when you want to make a point, but if someone else does we have to get into the ifs-and-whys?

I call shenanigans! ;)

Either way, this one has been fun - which is the whole point of this place, right?

Touche', Creggur! ::012::

But OTOH, I thought it important to point out why such a statement was in the owners manual. I doubt any manufacturer would have it in there were it not mandated by Big Guv'ment! ::025::

For me this thread was about the saftey of every S10 rider, not playing "gottcha" or having fun.

If you're talking about the *safety* of every S-10 rider, that's what we *ALL* want... That's why so many people have worked on the problem, modified harnesses, tried to seek out better parts, experimented, etc., etc., etc. to find workable solutions that can be implemented by anyone at home. I know I tried to do that, and I thank all the other folks who tried to find a solution to the issue, too. There were lots of great ideas presented in this thread. All those people tried to do something about the problem other than just whine and moan about it, or stomp their feet that someone else should solve it for them.

Nobody plays "Gotcha" better than you, Blu, and often it seems to me that's all you're trying to do. Pot, meet kettle. ::003::

So, you ready to have that beer? ;)

You know what is kind of funny when the topic of "safety" comes up?

We ride motorcycles.

An interesting tangent of this thread is how the different members of this community manage their personal risks, and perceive risk, as it pertains to their personal riding styles and life needs.

Some perceive the headlight harness as a great enough risk to address it preemptively. Others take a wait and see approach. Others deal with it when, (if), it occurs. And some take the assumption that it will, but look to address that belief by encouraging others with failures to report them, perhaps in the hopes that the problem will be addressed by Yamaha, for them personally, before they have the issue occur.

Different strokes and all that.

Hi guys,

Just a quick heads up for anyone interested. One of the folks who I sent my bike's maintenance log to let me know that they just had their headlight harness replaced under Y.E.S., and that the part number is different: 23P-84312-01-00. They also mentioned that the "Wires look to be a heavier gauge."

Best,

Chris

Looking up that part number on several difference part fiche websites I came up with nothing. Do you think that's because it's so new it hasn't hit the inventory yet? Did your buddy have a fried harness to trigger the warranty claim or was it preventative? (I know there has to have a problem to trigger the YES, but some dealers are more creative than others in warranty claims.)

My dealer showed me the new part number a couple of weeks ago, from the Yamaha parts catalog.

I ordered it from partshark.com for $61, had it a few days later. Inhale no desire to wait for my dealer when for a few bucks I can do the job right and be riding same day. The wires are heavier gauge. Installed with a pair of Osram Hyper 65w bulbs, full voltage, no wire heating. All is good and bright in the world.
