Hello all, just here to gather info. I’m looking at a real clean 2012. Debating between that a AT or a KTM 1290 SA.

Welcome aboard! That is three bikes in the same category but soooo different. It all depends on your intended use. AT= more off-road, KTM is road, Super Tenere does it both very well.

Welcome, from Texas. The Tenere is my favorite bike ever. The AT is more dirt orientated. And @Dirt_Dad can give you firsthand info on the KTM; traded his Tenere for one.

I don’t need completely dirt oriented because I have a CRF250l that I will keep for technical dirt terrain. The Tenere will be for daily commuting, ADV rides two up with my wife, and fire/forest roads with limited technical stuff. It sounds like this bike fits that bill. I worry the AT wouldn’t be as passenger friendly for the wife, and the KTM won’t have as much off-road prowess for when I want it. I would love to learn to ride a big ADV bike well off road.

Once again, your best reference point is Dirt_Dad. He had 'em both, and rode them both hard. (T-12 & KTM 1290)

Welcome.

Based on your stated goals you can't go wrong with a Super Tenere. It would serve you perfectly as both a commuter and a two up ride. It is very competent off pavement for those things you want to do with a big bike when not on your Honda.

Since you mentioned lack of off road prowess I assume you are thinking SAS and not SAR. The SAS is not a good choice for commuting or routine two up. Sure, it can do all that with ease, but it's the equivalent of driving your top of the line Lamborghini in stop and go, 5 MPH rush hour traffic. It can do it...but it's annoying.

3 limitations keep the SAS from being a awesome dirt weapon. A skid plate, cast wheels, and tires that aren't focused on holding a pavement line when you push 160 hp through them exiting a corner.

In my opinion, get a Tenere. They excel at what you want. Good luck.

Given that this is your criteria, then the S10 is the one for you.
